Missed opportunity (Spoilers)

I thought when the crew legit woke up and saw all the trees, etc, that a few new humans (Chris and Jennifer's progeny) would have greeted them as well. It would have added a nice touch.

I guess they were smart enough not to bring their children into that space prison. Crew woke up after 88 years. Those children would be born and die on ship with no hope to get out. That cruel.

That ending didnt made that much sense anyway. Like Jen and Chris probably died in around 45 years. Which means for 40 yeas all those trees and grass were on its own, guided by robots. And so many things could have gone wrong.

I didn't mean just their children - there could also have been grandchildren (from gene bank on ship - which btw was in the original script).

Having children would be monumentally cruel under those circumstances! A lifetime of horrific isolation, forbidding them to have sex because there's nobody there except immediate family, a life of uselessness on an automated ship, where the children are going to live and grow old having nobody to love and nothing to do? There would be literally nothing for those children to do for 80-odd years except watch films about a planet they can never see.

And can you imagine the "dad talks"? "Now son, I know that's a pretty girl in that freezer there, and you're going to die a virgin if you don't unfreeze her and try to win her over. And sure, I woke up the hottest frozen girl I could find and got her to have sex with me, but don't you...".

reply

Exact same thing I thought at that very moment. When the words started rolling I was like what the fuck where's their kids and their grandkids?? You know someone had been taking care of them chickens and shit. And by the way, where the hell did the chickens come from LOL??

reply

Livestock were probably in suspended animation like the crew and passengers.

Any children they have would have to grow up alone on the ship for 80 years or so. Better not to have kids.

The original screenplay, though, did suggest they had kids who then interbred and went on to populate the entire ship. Weirdly, the script describes kids of many ages AND races. Huh? Nothing in the screenplay suggests other people's embryos were aboard. What's with the other races?

The original screenplay also has the ship eject all the pods upon reboot, saving the Captain for last, whom Jim wakes up just in time to see himself get ejected.

Dark stuff

I was hoping to see the same, but it's just ambiguous enough that they might have been just about to come around the corner.

It would also have been interesting to be able to spot some sort of grave for both of them.
