Why use princesses?

Since they were doing the blood trick anyway, it seems as if any female would suffice, so why specifically go out and find girls who will be missed? Why not just grab a commoner, dress them up, mix the blood and chuck them in?

true - no need for big pay off either
Alas - hollywood script writers, even before wokism became a thing, those kind of script flaws were pretty common. I do wonder why....

Just another example of modern Hollywood trying to prove that women don’t need a prince in their lives.

The royal family's tiny drop of blood trick only works with royal blood. On "common stock" people the dragon will be able to smell the difference. They explained this in the promotional interviews.

Then why bother going through the charades of marriages? Why not just throw the girl directly into the pit?

Does the blood change when a commoner becomes royal through marriage?

It seemed like this behavior became ritualized in the kingdom over the centuries, and the residents attached a larger meaning to it. Making 3 sacrifices to grant protection and good fortune. And part of the ritual is this marriage charade. Really good point though.
