Why was Matthew friends with those deviants?

I know he was mentally retarded but why he was hanging out with those social deviants? Did he really think they liked him? Nope.

Small town prob not the best choice of friends. He also prob thought they were cool. He prob would of been bullied and beat up a lot by them if he wasn't there friend.

For some reason, I got the vibe as if he was a brother of one of the main guys. Or maybe even they were all siblings.
It's just a guess, or a way I saw it while watching.
But I also agree with the person above.

I haven't seen it in awhile but I think he is the brother of that heavy set guy. I remember worried about some tape missing that he has.

They were not his friends as friends don’t treat people like that. He was mentally challenged and sadly many like that struggle to make friends. Plus they also don’t understand when people are taking advantage of them
