Neve Campbell reportedly not returning for Scream 6

Directly from the horse's mouth. It's official.

Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film.

As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.

It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.

They've obviously low balled her monetarily and/or give her a shitty story arc (almost certainly both). Fuck 'em. Scream 5 was mediocre as fuck anyway. Good for her. Hope the next one flops.

Wow it must've been bad for her to come out and say that. And its not like she can go back on it now wow

reply

Yeah her statement is very blunt and to the point. No sugarcoating it.

Some bad blood behind the scenes perhaps.

Can't say that I blame her. She didn't have a huge role in 5 anyway, they could be trying to phase her out. If it's not worth her while she's well within her rights to tell them to stick it. I side with her. If they want to do the whole 'requel' thing and roll out the old guard for homages and nostalgia-sploitation then pay up and give them decent roles.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Hopefully they have fun writing her out of the next one and having some Scream die-hards shit on the film for not having, for many, the main character of the franchise.

They'd have been better of remaking it I reckon. All these 'requel' things are soft reboots anyway, trying to entice younger viewers (can't be calling it Scream 5 because all the kids these days haven't seen the first four and won't go to the cinema to see it) whilst also trying to retain the older fans by brining back the 'legacy' characters. A shamless marketing ploy to try cover as many bases at once to maximize profit.

Wonder what she was offered. google her Scream fees and you get all kinds of figures , nothing definite. https://www.reddit.com/r/Scream/comments/pmcm9k/neve_campbell_scream_5_salary/

Whatever it was offered ,was probably the same as Scream 5 no increase. and her coming back for 5 was probably low ball abit as no one sure it'd be a hit, so probably on condition they give her big increase for 6 (prob comparable to what she got on S4) and they must've reneged

Fuck all I reckon. The budget for Scream 5 was $24 mill. I agree that since her role was quite small, she probably accepted something not so significant but now that it was successful and they're moving forward she's likely asking for more.

Jamie Lee Curtis accepted a low salary for Halloween (2018) however she had a 'backend' deal where she earned a percentage based on how successful the film was...needless to say it was a huge hit and she likely made bank.

iHorror reports that Curtis is being paid a modest salary for her work on the upcoming Halloween film, in exchange for a slice of the profits if it is successful, the same profit-participation agreement that Blumhouse previously entered into with Ethan Hawke, star of the Blumhouse-produced films The Purge and Sinister. So far, Hawke has earned approximately $10 million from The Purge and Sinister, which grossed $48 million and $64 million, respectively, at the domestic box office.

According to the report, if the upcoming Halloween film’s box office performance is similar to that of The Purge and Sinister, Curtis would earn approximately $5 million. However, if the film outperforms this model (which is likely), that number could move closer to $10 million.

Halloween made $160 mill domestically ($255 mill worldwide)...it's safe to say JLC made over $10 mill, probably even over $15 mill.

I imagine they're not willing to give a similar offer to Neve, I can't imagine she had such a deal for Scream 5. Base salary wise, I wouldn't be surprised if she only got 2 or 3 mill tops. I see people on that reddit link thinking she may have got 5-9 mill for Scream 5. That seems a big chunk of the disclosed budget too me. But what do I know.

Always liked Neve but sad to see she is just as greedy as any other celebrity

I'd take her side over the studios any day.

So what if she wants to make money from it? They want her back to help profit from old school fans returning.

Scream 5 cost $24 million and made $140 million, that's with a post-covid January release date. That's a very profitable return. Then when you factor in VOD and home media it's an very healthy money maker. If they don't want to pay her a couple of mill more then they're being stingy bastards.

They're likely banking on low budget = no risks + more profit. They want to keep the cost down to maximize profits for themselves. Neve isn't here to slave away for the studios to make bank of her.

Scream 1 cost $14 mill back in 96, that's the equivalent to $25 mill today.
Scream 2 cost the equivalent to $45 mill.
Scream 3 equal to $67 mill.
Scream 4 equal to $51 mill.

As you can see they're throttling the budget with these new releases. Less than half of what the sequels cost to make.

What more is there really for her character? She's married, with kids, and doesn't even live in Woodsboro. I like the character, but really, she should be done. I was hoping that they would be done, but since they are going on with more sequels, I think it's time for them to really move away from the previous movies.

David Arquette shares his thoughts...

I'd love for her to be a part of it. A Scream movie without Sidney is kind of unfortunate, but I understand her decision. It's all a business in a way, they have to balance all these elements to fit a budget and produce a film. I get it, she's still alive! She [can] absolutely be in future ones, but I think it's up to fans to call for that in the future. [...] That is sudden, it's a business, though. I respect her decision, for sure.

So long Sidney! It doesn't matter to me. As sslssg put it, "What more is there really for her character?"

I actually didn't expect her in this installment after her phone conversation with Dewey since she told him that she'd never set foot in Woodsboro again.

Been thinking about this and the Sidney character. I could honestly say that she's the one character I wouldn't miss. Neve Campbell was fine in the role, but almost anyone could've played Sidney. The role is basically "generic ingenue who can look scared, fight back and swear like a sailor."

In Scream 2 they show a clip from Stab where Sidney and Billy have a conversation that's taken almost verbatim from Scream. Tori Spelling played Sidney the same way which is to say adequate.

I've often thought that actors like Neve Campbell are so fortunate to get a role in a film which becomes a big hit and spawns a lot of sequels. She made a ton of money. Whatever they offered her for Scream 6 was surely in the millions and as someone who is struggling to pay bills like most Americans, I have trouble garnering any sympathy for her.

If she really "loved" her fans, she'd do the movie no matter what they offered her. Spare me the phony affection Neve!

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, the real star of the Scream series has always been Ghostface or specifically Roger L. Jackson's voice. Without him sending chills down your spine, the Scream series is just a bunch of "scary movies".

Scream without Neve/Sidney is going to be a bitter pill to swallow, but I won't condemn. We don't know exactly what happened, or the direction the next movie will go in. I'll wait and see.
