I do blame the source. Had Sam been honest with himself about being utterly useless in battle and that he would have only gotten in the way, he wouldn't have imperiled Edd to come to his rescue.
Sure, there's no way to know for sure if Edd would have survived anyway. But at least he stood a fighting chance if he was only defending himself and hadn't seen his utterly useless friend too chickenshit to fight that he felt he had to come to his rescue.
To be clear, I'm not saying Sam is 100% culpable. But he definitely shares culpability for Edd's death. In my opinion, that culpability is pretty significant. Because I can't hold Edd solely responsible for reflexively going to Sam's aid when Sam so clearly wasn't capable of defending himself.
