Tyrion's reaction to Jon and Dany...

What was with the sad cuck face? I don't believe it was because Tyrion was jealous, previously he seemed to be pushing Dany towards Jon in that regard, so was the problem?

We don't hear the agreement between Cersei and Tyrion after her pregnancy reveal, so likely he made some kind of deal where Cersei's child would be named Dany's successor? Since they made it a point to show him and Dany arguing about the succession shorty before that. Which doesn't really make sense because Cersei wasn't going to honor the pact anyway and Tyrion would have absolutely no authority to make such a deal without Dany's consent.

I always wondered about this too because I never thought it was about jealousy either.

You may be onto something about some deal he made with Cersei (although I hate the idea of Tyrion trusting her to that degree)..
Or maybe he just thought, given the circumstances, that it was something that wouldn't end well with the impending war coming. Maybe it could get in the way of sound, unbiased judgement. Maybe..
But likely you're right about Cersei.

I don't recall Tyrion ever pushing, prodding, or coaxing Dany towards a romantic liaison with Jon. He wanted them to make a strategic political and military alliance to take the kingdoms away from Cersei. I believe he hedged his bets that Dany was so adamant and "tunnel-visioned" about regaining the throne for her family, that she would not pursue (or have an interest in) any romantic attachments. I think he was let down when those two did develop an attraction and his sulking in the shadows (combined with his facial expression of displeasure) revealed that. For all of his book smarts, his common sense did not allow for him to see that possible outcome. It may not have been jealousy over the sexual rendezvous...but he did see HIS potential as a successor begin to die.

As for his stance on succession should Dany die, I always assumed it was because he was positioning himself for the job. He never made any specific suggestions as to WHOM should be the successor, but his persistence on the issue is usually indicative of someone who wants to sort of "push" the topic in a non-obvious way towards themselves.

Just my 2 cents.

He's losing his grip on power.

reply

He already did that. The show has made him utterly incompetent.

reply

He wasn't as good as many think and he's had plot armor since the beginning. The blackwater wildfire was a mess.

But the sad cuck face is because he sees his power slipping away. It's the same as in the scene with Varys.

Jon is a political threat to Tyrion, that's probably the main reason he was horrified by the liaison. Tyrion has been Dany's #1 advisor forever, but his plans had been failing for a while, and this interloper comes in and changes the game and loops them into fighting the Others instead of conquering Westeros, and suddenly Jon is the expert on the enemy and he's in charge of the whole campaign and Tyrion is reduced to administrative support of a war effort instead of being the grand master. And now Snow is dazzling Danerys with his good looks and his comparatively impressive height, and, um, using hormonal influences to squeeze Tyrion even further out!

Sure, there's some sexual and romantic jealousy, but that's not the main thing, remember Tyrion didn't get the least bit jealous of Dario. There's also the political resentment, but really, I think the whole situation is aggravating the self-hatred that is never far beneath Tyrion's surface. He loves Dany but would never dream of approaching her, he's too screwed up in too many ways. And here's this guy who is only a few inches taller and with 1/4 of Tyrion's IQ, and he's taking Danerys away!

reply

I think he was jealous of Dario but he was still in control at that point. He did convince Dany to leave him behind after all. But it's not working anymore because some of his plans went south.

reply

Well, it's also not working because the primary goal has shifted to something he knows nothing about - fighting the undead. Suddenly all his knowledge of Westerosian politics is... a secondary concern at best, and he's been bumped way down the ladder of importance.

So has Varys, I suppose, but Varys doesnt let his personal feelings interfere with his work.

Tyrion knows them getting romantically involved isn't a good thing, hence the look on his face.

He had to know it was a possibility, Dany said all along that she was planning to include a political marriage in her campaign of conquest, which would mean marrying someone who could hand her at least one of the seven kingdoms. Which meant someone like Robin Arryn or catching Walder Frey between wives, and Jon is currently ruling the largest of the seven kingdoms. So marriage to him was a possibility from the moment he was acclaimed Kinginthenorth, purely from a political and strategic viewpoint.

But Tyrion didn't know that Danerys would fall in love, or that Snow would take over the whole show and put a stop to Tyrion's long-cherished campaign of conquest and revenge. It's hard for him to deal with, and I really hope he doesn't end up doing something stupid.
