Were men really like this towards women back in the day?

I'll admit I have had some sexist thoughts and enjoy the fact that she makes me food and cleans up for us but I try and help here and there and am grateful she does it. I dont expect it either but dont discourage the gender role either. Also how they treat them like property at times and how they command them what to do from time to time and how they believe they are unequal. Just a different time I suppose but is a lot of this fictionalized?

There were and continue to be individuals who resemble the stereotype men in this series; however it is exaggerated. It is a caricature of the 1960s. A lot of it is fictionalized.

reply

I think you're wrong.

I wasn't employed during the 1960s as I was busy being a small child, so I can't have claimed to have experienced that sort of workplace. But everything I've read or viewed about that era, both fiction and non-fiction, backs up the "Mad Men" writers.

I've seen critiques that go both ways. Some people worked at ad agencies in the 60s and said "yup, that's exactly the way it was," whereas others say "nope, that never would have been tolerated at our company."

reply

If that's exactly how it was at *some* agencies, then the program is officially believable.

I mean it's all fiction, but the agencies at the show weren't meant to represent all agencies, just to show the sort of things that went on at the time.

reply

Indeed.

The actual phrase is “back in the OLD days.” It makes sense.

Your quote is from the ghetto. It makes no sense.

Back in WHICH day, illiterate Troglodyte?
