Sad how so many people think this movie is better than the series...

IT'S NOT!!!!

This movie was a *beep* joke. I bet Paul and David, who appeared at the end of the movie, also thought the same thing.

I had to write this. I read IMDB reviews all the time and this is the only time I felt I needed to say something!
I thought this movie was freakin' hilarious.
And I'm a huge (the hugest) fan of the old TV show. I watched it in high school, had their posters in my locker. Actually bought blue and white Adidas in 9th grade. Have rented the original series on Netflix and watched it over and over. I've recorded them on my DVR. I actually considered buying the car on ebay. I know every single episode. My husband and kids love to give me such a hard time about being a S&H nerd. I was in love with Starsky when I was 16. Now, 40 years later, I think Hutch is beautiful. Funny how our tastes change.
The movie is a perfect sendup of the corny show, the bro-loves-bro theme, the clothes and music, the disco-70s era. I get a kick out of watching the movie - I am viewing it again right now, for the 5th or 6th time. It's a nice Sunday afternoon guilty pleasure while I'm cooking. Stiller and Wilson are awesome as usual, even if they did change the characters.
Don't take your old faithful TV shows so seriously. Lighten up. Snap out of it.

I know I'm years late to this thread but I just had to post my amazement how many people seen to think this movie is a remake and are seriously and affrontedly telling us why 'the original' was so much better....
For goodness sake, it 's a parody, a spoof, a rather clever and very funny take off.
You think Glaser and Soul didn't know !!!???

reply

My only gripe is that spoofs like this (which I got many laughs from) ruin the chances for a serious remake. I was bummed in the same way with Wild Wild West. They could have taken it into a franchise of old West James Bond fare. But instead the soup is spoiled. So yeah, S&H was a funny spoof and I like the duo but I am sad that the heart of the original is forever to remain in the shadow of a medium-weight comedy.

I've never seen the series from the 1970s so I cannot compare the two, but I have relatives that grew up and watched it when "S&H" originally aired.

While they will always be fans of the show, they kinda liked the 2004 movie just for the comedy alone. Deep down they recognize David Soul as Detective Ken Hutchinson and Paul Michael Glaser as Detective Dave Starsky. Nobody else.

I don't think this ruined the chance of Hollywood making a serious "S&H" reboot/remake/continuation. Based off of the horse dung they kept churning out in the 2010s, I'm honestly surprised "S&H" hasn't been done to death by now.

I'm pretty sure some studio exec. out there has this idea floating around in their head.

I guess the options was to either do S&H as a serious prequel (or even a sequel) or a reboot set present day (like Miami Vice)..

Or do it as a comedy as happened.

It was fun ...
