"There are no pacts between lions and men"

I'm not normally a big fan of Brad Pitt. He's sometimes a good actor, but he is also mediocre or bad in more than one movie

But he really brings it in Troy. This is usually regarded as a bad movie, but it's not. Given its budget and scale I understand that it's not a great movie, but it's entertaining and cool, and Brad Pitt really earned his stripes here because he carried it

He was great in this. He played a very modern take on Achilles, as a superstar athlete who knows he is the best, and is too competitive to let anyone take that from him. His Achilles fought not just to win any given battle, but to have his name remembered through the ages. And we still do.

reply

That's pretty much Achilles in the book.

reply

No it's not usually regarded as a bad movie.

reply

Ok

It is often regarded as a bad-to-mediocre film. Brad Pitt has publicly implied that he regrets doing this movie, and Peter O’Toole outright said this movie sucks

reply

Got a link to Pitt saying what you claim? I recall O'Tool was angry his screen time is so brief.

That article is behind a pay wall, can you copy and paste the relevant part?

“I had to do Troy because [...] I pulled out of another movie and then had to do something for the studio. So I was put in Troy. It wasn't painful, but I realized that the way that movie was being told was not how I wanted it to be. I made my own mistakes in it. What am I trying to say about Troy? I could not get out of the middle of the frame. It was driving me crazy. I'd become spoiled working with David Fincher. It's no slight on Wolfgang Petersen. Das Boot is one of the all-time great films. But somewhere in it, Troy became a commercial kind of thing. Every shot was like, 'Here's the hero!' There was no mystery."

reply

Troy was too commercial for Brad "the artiste," ay? Well, who cares what he thinks, he let's his wife dress his boys in girls dresses.

reply

Brad Pitt was very good in this. I loved this film.
