Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 made a reference to Doctor Strange, possibly hinting at a larger universe of Marvel characters within the trilogy.

wanna know what's wired? Doctor Strange was mention in Spider-Man "2" now Sam Raimi is going to direct Doctor Strange "2".

reply

Yes. And after the announcement that Raimi is (likely) going to direct the next Doctor Strange, this reference is more interesting than ever.
One could say it was... destiny! :D

Sucks Scott Derrickson departed the Doctor Strange sequel (damn right I rather have him direct the film over Raimi), but Raimi taking over makes sense. While he probably wouldn’t have been my first choice, the idea of him directing this particular film is cool for several reasons; like many fans, I’ve also been curious about him working with Marvel Studios. Hopefully he’ll knock it out of the park.

Why Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man Will Return In Doctor Strange 2

reply

I'm tired of so many people insisting that just because Raimi is directing the next Dr. Strange movie that Sony and Marvel are going to fire Tom Hollond and replace him with Tobey Maguire! Not going to happen!

reply

NO ITS NOT...BUT TOBEY'S SPIDERMAN MAKING AN APPEARANCE FROM AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE ALA INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE...THATS VERY LIKELY.

Spider-Man 3 Can Now Explain Raimi's Trilogy Doctor Strange Reference

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 included a Doctor Strange Easter egg. It can evolve into a part of the story for Marvel's third Spider-Man movie.
