Did critics think this was a remake?

Rotten Tomatoes' critical consensus reads: "Sleek and shiny on the surface, The Fast and the Furious recalls those cheesy teenage exploitation flicks of the 1950s." Did critics at the time erroneously think this film was supposed to be a remake of the 1954 Roger Corman B-movie The Fast and the Furious and try to interpret the film as such? It seems like critics will intentionally belittle a movie if they think it is a remake.

it is a remake....of point break

I think that Rob Cohen even acknowledged in the director's commentary that Point Break was a big influence. He didn't make a secret of it.
