What Happened to the Gross Out Rom Com?: The Death of Two Genres

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f61fs7vbJAk

The 90s and early 00s were filled with gross out romantic comedies. There’s Something About Mary, Shallow Hal, Europtrip, American Pie, Meet the Parents, Superbad, I love you Beth Cooper and so many more. But since the mid 2010s both the gross out movie and the romcom, and the hybrid - gross out romcom - have practically gone extinct.

What happened to them? Well in this video I decide to answer that question and more.

Let’s dive in!

"PC hasn't killed comedy, we still have John Oliver, Abbott Elementary & Marvel movies!"

Good grief, that is bleak.

What killed Comedy's and dramas at the theater are platforms like Disney+,Netflix etc. They can make them better, longer, into series and people don't have to leave the home. A good example of a drama is the Irishman. A film like that would have had an instant theatrical release. No longer. But on the bright side they can make the films a bit longer as well, it a mini series and have the exact same production values as a theatrical release. So the romcom is still out there just not the same type of access or format.

That's true. Grossout & romantic movies definitely still exist. Mixing the 2 into 1 movie was a way of trying to appeal to as wide a demographic as possible. Which was a better idea when media was less fractured.

The other part of this was producers trying to repeat the success of There's Something About Mary. But turns out it wasn't just the formula that made it popular. It was actually a good movie. This happens a lot with all movies. Pixar, Jackie Chan & John Hughes spawned a ton of imitators. That eventually runs its course.

1. Heteronormative relationships are not a thing in modern Hollywood.
2. Many viewers would suffer irreparable psychological damage from the offensive gross out aspects. Lawsuits and protests and violence would ensue.

reply

There can hardly be a heteronormative romantic comedy any more. Almost all female characters under fifty years old in movies and tv series are now lesbians. Not that there's anything wrong with gay women, but it's become ubiquitous on screen to the point that young women characters appear and if you bet they'll eventually be making out you'll usually win. It's not that it's bad, it's just that it has become a tiresome cliche.
