I hate being this smart. It's a toy ship that sinks

It looks like a kids toy ship in a bathtub as it goes into the water.

Super-imposing people onto it didn't change that for me.

This is why digital effects are better.

It was a good mix of digital and practical effects.

It's not great if the effect takes me out of the moment.

I agree, when I was young watching this it was great and something to see. I went last night again and it is really showing its age. The sinking looked exactly like you described. There were some shots that I was thinking if I was actually seeing the same movie as I did long ago. But that was 1997 technology though I suppose. Looked good at the time I suppose.

I wonder if better camera techniques could make a model look more realistic?

Or was this upgrade to blame? Digital remaster killed the illusion of scale?

I was also thinking about this, the sweeping exterior shots of the entire ship, like when it was docked before it shipped off, it looked very rough. I absolutely think the 4K I could pick out a lot more issues. Also I love miniatures when they are done well, maybe now with the better technology they could have made the water looking better when the back of the ship was sinking. The water was the thing that stuck out most and made it look really bad for me. Because the scale of the ship next to the water spray and waves didn't match up.

Like the blu ray when I watched the original Exorcist, I could see the wires that were holding the character up when she was supposed to be levitating. The dvd quality when I watched it I couldn't see them at all. I hope they remove them for that 4K release at least.

With miniatures things like fire and smoke also can look like a match instead of an inferno.

reply

The ship was brand new though. Maybe it did look "fake" in real life.

reply

Good point!

You seriously think a green-screen CGI ship would have looked better?

reply

Still better than that boat in the Land of the Lost intro
