Which mistake was the dumbest of all?

So right after finding the money, they decide to count it ... right in the back of their *beep* truck sitting on the side of the road! I know it's a tiny town and they are out in the boonies, but certainly someone could (and did) happen by.

Or, was it going back to the plane and putting some of the money back? This was pretty idiotic. Not only do you give away $500K, but you have to go back to the scene and risk being seen again (which of course happened in the film). This sets in motion a series of events that leads to several murders.

"Not only do you give away $500K"

It was $50,000, which is only ~1.1% of $4,400,000. Hank's wife suggested $500,000 but you can see clearly that it's only 5 stacks of bills ($10,000 each) that he puts in the trash bag in the plane. Had it been $500,000 it would have been 50 stacks of bills.

Booze and Lou was their downfall. If I remember correctly.

not taking a vacation

The biggest mistake was at the end when Hank didn't load his gun when he was alone after everyone had split up to look for the plane. Instead, he waits to fumble around for bullets inside the plane after the FBI agent had already revealed himself to be a phony. This was probably Raimi's mistake, actually. He wanted the drama of that scene but failed to set it up in a plausible way.
