Ordell then proceeds to unarm himself in a dark room without properly scanning the premises. I know Ordell is a dummy but he's meant to be streetwise at least. I like this movie but the ending could have been thought out a little better.

Yup, that didn't make any sense.

Is the ending like that in the book?

i haven't read the book either but i think he was just caught by a surprise (as was the audience)
although arguably it was fairly obvious it was some sort of set-up

oh well.
