Pretty sadly bad..

Surprised to see that some people actually really like this movie! To each their own but for myself the few scenes with Joely Richardson were the only redeeming thing of this movie.

Was this not basically the same plot as Sphere? Others have mentioned a few other movies as well... plot rehashes are not necessarily bad if done well but it seemed that most all the actors (especially Fishburne and Sam Neill) were just going thru the motions of their overly stereotyped characters.

The Cooper character (I like the actor, but this character was so over the top!) produced more cringe-worthy scenes than any I can recall in a long time... I was actually embarrassed just watching it alone.

I remember all the hype before the release of this film. The posters were pretty epic as were the film previews in the cinema. So I was pumped up when I went to see it. The acting and the props were magnificent as were the first two acts. But the third act left me disappointed and dissatisfied .. I'm up for a bit of horror: aka Alien et al. But the final scenes were empty and pointless and left no hope ... 5/10 from me ...

If alien is horror than so is jurassic park, i consider alien a thriller not horror

Alien is a sci-fi horror.

I too was hoping for an interesting intriguing space movie, and was disappointed by a cheap horror flick. Apart from an interesting start, it had almost no redeeming qualities.

Lol I thought Joely Richardson was the worst thing about it. But then again, I think she's the worst thing about anything she's in.

CG gore is the worst thing that has ever happened to the horror genre.

I actually try to watch this movie once every few years since its release, and I can never seem to get into it. I'm a huge horror fan, and I like science-fiction, but I just can't seem to hang with Event Horizon. Could be that I'm just not a big fan of Sam Neil. The only thing I ever really liked him in was Possession. Come to think of it, he ruined In the Mouth of Madness for me, too!

Like you said, to each their own.

If I don't reply, you're probably on my ignore list for something I forgot already

I think one of the main reasons people hated it is because they hyped it up as a sci-fi movie instead of a horror movie. Thus is def horror not scifi. And now they are doing it again with the new dvd cover, the old cover was more horror, same with the collector box. But the new cover with the grav couches is DUMB and once again making people think its a nerdy space movie and its not.

I love the movie and also expected a sciffi but i was presently surprised and scared by it in theaters

I think a lot of it has to do with nostalgia.

It’s a great cast, of course. And interesting premise, I suppose. But the cgi and dialogue is pretty bad, even for 1997.

I thought the first quarter of the film was great - good actors, nice layout of the ship - a mystery unfolding. It's what happens in the second half that makes this film crash hard.
