Event Horizon was completely ruined by that comic relief black guy

Seriously, that dude was *beep* annoying.

this was made in the days of racist studio bosses pandering to black stereotypes. In fact the entire film was ruined due to studio. Remember it is hollywood

this was made in the days of racist studio bosses pandering to black stereotypes, so in that respect it actually resisted much of the black cliches. In fact the entire film was ruined due to studio. Remember it is hollywood

I think you're being generous with the claim that it was only the corny one-liners that ruined this film. The robotic exchange in dialogue, the movie sets (space ship, 'hell props' from Party City) looked as though they were made to replicate a video game, the random choppy strobe lights, the scarce to nonexistent chemistry between the actors/characters, and the one dimensional idea that Hell is blood, barbed wire and maggots... I'm being harsh because I thought that the premise was so fantastic: the merging of technology, science, the spirit world, faith, hell, damnation, retribution.. with a story like this and a studio to back with a budget, and they resort to Doom meets Starcraft. I remember as a kid that these high-action CGI-packed popcorn movies seemed to be the craze considering how many of them were coming out. Kudos to Mr. Anderson to getting the film done with little to no time to polish his work. It unfortunately shows in the final cut and what I see is a rushed action movie.

Maybe I'm a bit too old to be introducing myself to the scifi movies of the late 90's, because when I was 7 I played my Mortal Kombat VHS tape until it basically stopped working. Video game inspired by a movie? Doable. A movie inspired by a video game? Terrible. I can admire the cult following considering how much of a sleeper is was in theaters, but the fact that this and The Babadook are neck-in-neck by .1 point makes me feel pensive about the rating system. Alas, I don't want to point fingers at people because they like and appreciate the film. Only dovchb@gs lack the integrity to try and persuade people's opinions on movies they like, and there are enough of those already. Cheers! :)

Nothing wrong with a comedic character in a horror. But they didn’t time his uses correctly. The way he showed up as the Doctor was about to kill Morpheus ... wasn’t the right place for comedy.

Yeah, a major trope used in the 90’s unfortunately. Very irritating...

I didn't have a problem with him. The character happened to be a wisecrack as part of his personality which added a little bit of levity and humor in a few scenes to otherwise straight dark and gritty sci fi horror. I didn't feel like it was overdone at all. Hudson from Aliens had way more comedic dialogue throughout that film and most people liked that character.

They definitely should have toney down his humor. What I thought was striking is that sometimes he sounds EXACTLY like Denzel W. Exactly.

reply

Apparently, he had more of a character arc. But I think the way the film was edited, a lot of it was cut out, and the studio just kept him as the token comic relief bc that's the only thing that was shown for him.
