I prefer this to Independance Day

The FX are just as good (if understandably less epic in scope). The action is more exciting. The characters are more likeable and have better chemistry together. Shame it was shaded slightly at the box office by the mid-90s cultural obsession with UFOs etc; this should have been the bigger hit of the two.

What's more, it's the second and last great film Jan de Bont directed. His career really dived after this.

Yes I think I have watched Twister more I think its also on ITV2 more as well.

reply

Yep. Both films are hilariously dumb, but Twister knows it's dumb and fully embraces it. Independence Day doesn't know it's dumb and instead tries to be some three hours long sweeping character ensemble epic. The creators of Independence Day actually submitted the film to the Best Director, Best OG Screenplay, and Best Picture categories at that year's Academy Awards...you wouldn't do that unless you genuinely thought your film was that good. They were trying to make something serious without realizing just how stupid their product was. Twister, however, is quick, fun, and isn't trying to be some groundbreaking masterpiece.

Independence Day shit all over this movie. Who are the people in this thread kidding?

reply

I wouldn’t say either movie is that much better than the other. I like Twister a little better, mostly because Independence Day is too long and drawn out, what with the ensemble cast, only half of which I care to watch (Smith, Pullman, and Quaid).

reply

One was a mega blockbuster, the other wasn't.

reply

Well you’re right, but it’s not like Twister didn’t rake in $400 mil without an A-list actor.

Independence Day certainly benefited from Will Smith’s rise to mega-stardom, and there should’ve been even more of him in the movie.

reply

One took itself too serioulsy, the other didnt.

One was going for the Oscar gold, the other wasnt.

One is an hour too long, the other wasnt.

Hmmmmm I wonder which film is which?

reply

Goldblum's posturing in ID and the Jurassic Park series is pretty much intolerable.

I think I might prefer Twister. It depends on the day. These aren't really movies that I would compare though. I was working at a movie theatre when both of these movies were released. I think I was impressed with Independence Day as it was the first movie trailer to have SDDS sound. I liked to watch people jump as it wasn't expected in a trailer at the time. I'm not saying that I.D. was realistic in any way, but Twister irked me a little with the progression of the size of the tornadoes, and Bill Pullman has never been my favourite actor.

That being said, I think Twister is a little more fun, and it doesn't have Will Smith in it. Smith grated on me back then too. Also a plus with the sound... we were having a midnight screening of Twister at one of the theatres downtown that was on the top floor of a mall. We did have the sound turned up, but the bass was so good that during the tornadoes it was shaking the lights in the food court in the basement. The janitorial staff came up to see what was happening.

reply

Wow that part of about the bass sound of the twisters is awesome.

I think you got you Bills confused tho.

reply

Yes. Wow I totally thought I wrote Paxton. Lol. I must I have been stuck on Independence Day.

reply

Lol there’s actually a website where they show pics of either Bill and quiz you on which one it is.
