View Askew Universe

So, I'm a new Kevin Smith fan. I love his films but the ones that stick me the most is the ones that are less silly-adventure types and more the grounded based comedies like CHASING AMY, CLERKS, CLERKS 2 etc.

Now, since Jay and Silent Bob appear in most of the VA universe, how would you place the many different films by tone? Cause I can't imagine all the silly things that happened in Jay and Silent Strike Back actually took place in the same universe as Clerks.

Based on tone I'd say:

GROUNDED
- Clerks
- Clerks 2
- Chasing Amy

SILLY ADVENTURES
- Dogma
- Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
- Mallrats (way too silly and slapsticky to be with the Clerks gang)

I tend to imagine that the whole Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is just their version of the *beep* that happened to them. They were stoned and probably imagined most of the event that occured. But Jay did have a "Justice" shirt in Clerks 2 so I dunno.... Anyone?

Mallrats and Clerks are in the same universe. Both movies reference the girl who drowned in the pool.

Brodie mentions a Cousin Walter that does some weird sexual stuff. It could be the same Cousin Walter that Randall talks about in Clerks. That makes Brodie and Randall cousins.

Chasing Amy references Kaitlin who fucked a dead guy in the bathroom in Clerks

The View Askew Universe is like the MCU. There's more grounded stuff (Clerks/Daredevil) but it's open to fantastical adventures (Guardians of the Galaxy/Dogma)

reply

When it comes down to it, all the movies are in the same universe. Chasing Amy references characters that were also mentioned in Clerks and Mallrats.

reply

True, it's just that it's hard to believe that the world of JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK / DOGMA take place in the same world. Those 2 are beyond silly, while CLERKS 1+2 specifically are so grounded. Nothing fantasy based events ever occur there.

But in Clerks 2, Jay did wear a Justice t shirt. Was this a reference to Shanon Elizabeth's character in said movie?

Anyway, thanks!

reply

Yep it's a reference to Justice from Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back is more or less meant as an intentionally goofy over-the-top self-parody of View Askew and I'll admit I actually like it.

Clerks 2 was meant as a sort of "grand finale" originally, which is why it's more grounded and focused on Dante and Randal again.

Dogma is the really weird one, and in my opinion is the weakest of the movies.

I'll admit, I like Mallrats more than Chasing Amy but aside from the juvenile humor, I'd consider Mallrats to be in the same "grounded" set of movies as Clerks and Chasing Amy.

Hell, even the slapstick antics and vulgar comedy is grounded in the sense that Brodie and TS are essentially late teenagers/early 20's who are still in the early years of adult life and are more or less overgrown adolescents.

LOVE ALL THE FILMS...MALLRATS IS WAY BETTER THAN MOST GIVE IT CREDIT FOR...I WISH I WAS THE AGE I WAS WHEN SMITH WAS MAKING THESE CLASSICS AGAIN.

reply

I agree with that. I think it became fashionable to criticize Mallrats. Even Kevin Smith is apologetic for it because of all the criticism. I think it´s not a bad movie at all.

reply

The director's cut is pretty shit, you can see why the reshot the beginning, but still worth a watch for all the extra scenes.
