The best Submarine movie ever made!!

Tension, suspense, acting, effects and action are all superb. Simply the best hands down,

reply

Hahahahhaa... WRONG!

reply

It is good but can't say the best. I really wish the race stuff at the end was taken out, it just weakens the film. I gotta go with hunt for red october as the best.

reply

Not even close to being the best. For me it's a toss-up between "Hunt For Red October" and "Das Boot" being the best.

reply

You're all wrong. Down Periscope is the best sub movie ever...

reply

No one is right or wrong as the point of discussion is a matter of personal non-factual opinion. What one person likes or thinks is best is right for them. there is no wrong.

As opposed to a fact based opinion that can be wrong. Belief that the Earth is flat for example.

Another example of a wrong fact based opinion is thinking that Shattered Sword is revisionist garbage.

I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!

reply

Thank you for the education to us all. We are very grateful.

That said, YOU are incorrect. It is undeniably FACTUAL that Down Periscope IS the greatest submarine movie ever made.
For God's sake, the other movies suggested don't even have a plank on their boats!

reply

Oh come on. There wasn't anything racial about this film whatsoever. I know, you're talking about the horse dialogue. No way was that supposed to be a jab at him being an African American. Hackman's character wouldn't have even hired Denzel in the beginning if he had a problem with the color of his skin. And even after the two went head on throughout the film, they respected each other in the end. The horse scene was just Hackman having to be right. And then him using it as a joke in the end. He was a stubborn captain stuck in his ways, sure. Not used to anyone challenging him. But clearly not a racist.

I was serving on the USS Cavalla in 1995 when this movie came out. Every other submariner I've spoken to thinks this is the worst or one of the worst submarine movies released. The script is the biggest disappointment; the good acting is not near enough to make up for it.

Why did they have to go stupid with things like;

Bilge Bay - Doesn't exist.
A Sailor tightening sprung bolts on a seawater flange - The seawater systems are welded.
An officer mashing (push-ups) an enlisted man - Never seen this happen on a boat.
The captain's dog underway - Stupid.
Sailors running around when the diving alarm is sounded - Where's the fire you dorks?
Fighting over which Silver Surfer is best. - never actually seen enlisted men fighting on the four boats I served on.
300 pound cook - Even in 1995 there were weight standards that were adhered to.
Video game style sonar display - Easier just to keep it real instead of dumbing it down.
Noisy deck grates in the forward compartment. - Sound deadening tiles are used instead; stealth is the idea right?

If you're going to mutiny, keep all the small arms under your control, don't allow them to be accessible by the ones your taking control from.

When I tell people without submarine experience that Kelsey Grammer's comedy Down Periscope is more believable, they think I'm kidding. When I say the same things to submariners they smile.

Crimson tide is one of the more embarrassing sub movies made.

reply

Yeah, Crimson Tide is really bad, but for for pure dreck, U-571 has to be the all-time boobie-prize winner. No redeeming qualities whatsoever. A pure fantasy.

As a Navy man I love the message and the scenario of this movie. I do enjoy watching it! There are a lot of inaccuracies, though, that get annoying fast when you actually understand Navy life and lingo. Civilians don't care as much about the inaccuracies nor do they understand. Me personally? Hunt for Red October rules!

reply

the best is Das Boot, even in 2016 it still holds up, as the most realistic/epic submarine movie ever made. No other submarine movie came close.

reply

Agree, Das boot is the best. Surprised not mentioned more often

One of my favourites is The Enemy Below http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050356/?ref_=nv_sr_1. They even mention it during the bus scene.

I also enjoyed Below http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0276816/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 but more for the creepiness.

reply

Yes - another vote for Das Boot.

reply

I agree I thought this was pretty awesome!
