Why did Stanley take the mask off right after the Cuban Pete scene?

After the big song and dance number, the masked Stanley runs away from the distracted police and hides. Then he immediately removes the mask, losing his powers that would have helped him get away safely, while the cops and Tyrell's men are still after him. I never understood this. Does anyone have any thoughts as to why he did that?

I'm thinking it's budget reasons that interfered with the story.

No, but it did strike me as odd as well.

Probably to add a bit of drama. If he was the Mask, we could be sure he’d get away but running away as Stanley creates the threat he might get caught.

If this were made today, they would probably say there is a time limit to how long he can wear the mask at a time and/or maybe the mask drains his energy too much while wearing it forcing him to take it off to rejuvenate.

the storyline reason was so that the redhead reporter could see him transition and know that he was The Mask
