The absurdity of the story.

The Stand is absurd for the following reasons:

1. The US government would never develop a virus that could wipe-out civilisation

2. The US government would never commit genocide, i.e. releasing the virus behind the Iron Curtain and in the People's Republic of China

3. The US government would never kill journalists

Obviously, Stephen King hates the US government and the US military.

Ever read "The Hot Zone"?

reply

I don't necessarily agree, Cairanm. To put it better, I think it's entirely plausable that a superflu could be created by the U.S. I think there is a lot of things done behind closed doors.

With that said, would the U.S. commit genocide against the rest of the world in response to it getting out, or killing journalists? I agree that there is some license taken with such an idea. However, I think it would take only *one* person with enough power to ensure that the virus got out.

So that thing with Reuters journalists just never happened? Lol

To what are you referring?

reply

Wikileaks

reply

Please elaborate, as I have no idea what you are talking about.

Having looked it up, I found this:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-iraq-usa-journalists/leaked-u-s-video-shows-deaths-of-reuters-iraqi-staffers-idUSTRE6344FW20100406

True, the journalists were killed but it seems that it could easily have been that the helicopter crew did not know that they were journalists.

I believe the OP was referring to intentionally killing members of the media, knowing who they were.

reply

Well considering they were carrying cameras which are clearly visible in the video, I find it hard to believe their version of events.

There was also a story of a journalist being placed on a drone kill list.

reply

Perhaps with 20/20 hindsight, things are clearer than they are when the decision is made. However, during the stress of action, mistakes are sometimes made. So I'm willing to cut the military some slack in this instance.

reply

If they intentionally target hospitals filled with civilians I don’t find it hard to believe they would target journalists, although I suppose it’s a 50/50 chance whether or not they knew they were journalists.

reply

I told Stephen on you

reply

1. This could happen by accident as a bi-product of other research.

2. There are some Native Americans who walked the Trail of Tears who disagree with this.

3. I'd buy that they would kill journalists. They might need to trump up charges to do so, but I'd believe this.

reply

Obvious sarcasm for effect.

The US government would certainly do all these things. The OP obviously fishing for replies back in the day.

reply

indeed
*any* government will do all of those things

reply

I think by the time journalists were being killed, the government was in a state of near collapse. Some extremists may have been able to seize power.

reply

You must really trust your government. Especially if you believe they havent worked on bio weapons
