Far superior sequel
The original was quite boring, this was epic. One of the few films in history where the sequel was not only better but FAR superior.

shareI totally agree, and I adore this move! One of the best of the nineties!
Both major plotlines are superbly done, the fabulous Joan Cusack as Debbie steals the show when she's on, and Christina Ricci matches her she she's sent to summer camp. Priceless!
Not sure I agree that the sequel is superior to the first film--I find myself watching the first film more often than Family Values--but it IS a good sequel. We were pretty lucky, I think, to get two great films out of the franchise. I'm surprised they never tried to go for a third.
The Thanksgiving scene will always be a classic.
I think I much prefer the second because of the shift in focus in characters in the second movie.
Agreed, it's surprising and disappointing that we never got a third movie around 1994-5.
I don’t agree the first is boring but I love this one more than the first
shareThis seems to be a common take, but all in all I found the sequel to be on roughly equal footing to the original.
To each their own.
Yeah, we're definitely on a different page there. I'll concede that the original might be better for children, though I can see today's kids getting bored by it.
shareThe original might be better for children? My boomer grandparents loved the original but would never watch Values because it was too kiddie.
shareNow see what happened is you saw both as a kid and gravitated more towards the one geared for kids and now you are grown and your tastes never improved so you think the adult movie must be the kid movie because you grown now so it must be.
shareThis is the kind of movie Hollywood would be making today if filmmakers still had the guts to stand up to the mindless goons promoting "political correctness."
