Yup. When I saw it in the theatre in Sydney the whole cinema burst out laughing. I can't imagine it being TOO difficult to find two genuine out of work Australian actors in Hollywood at the time - blimey!

If I’m not mistaken, Peter Phelps was one of the Aussie guys coming up the trail as Utah was asking if there was anyone out. So there was at least one genuine Australian actor there.

OT. For some reason, Australians can actually do the "American" accent better than any other foreigner can, even Canadians and Canadians come pretty close.

Yes, casting could have rounded up plenty of Australians in California to play the cops.

British actors have now proven to do damned good American accents too. Check Damian Lewis in almost everything he's done, for example.

I can't tell the difference between most Canadian actors and American.

BTW, despite not being a surfer or particularly into surf culture, I thought this was a very decent film.

I think that's because Australian actors all know that if they ever want to make real money acting, they need to crack Hollywood. And for that, they need a perfect American accent, so it's included in their training and they're motivated to work very, very hard at it.

True about needing to crack Hollywood but a generic American accent is not that hard to do. Not to mention American culture is so pervasive in other Anglo nations that it generally comes easy to us. There are also much trickier nuances for a non-native Australian when trying to replicate the Aussie accent which is why you see so many actors failing at getting it right.

Lots of Brit actors fail at American accents, which I find amusing, and few attempt regional accents or nuances.

So a couple of shout-outs to two actors that IMHO nailed it: First is Benedict Cumberbatch in the "Doctor Strange" Marvel movies, BTW. He actually captured a regional nuance in his accent - the faint nasal honk of the sophisticated and highly educated New Yorker. And I'm not from the Bronx so I'm not the best judge, but Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn had a Bronx accent that hurt the ears as the real thing should, and her accent changed to more standard pronunciation when she started talking psychology and remembered her education.

I may have heard worse Cockney accents in American entertainment, our TV producers aren't picky! Throw in an inappropriate "oi", and you've got the job! But Van Dyke deserves his infamy, nobody ever fucked up so badly in such a high-profile project.

But lots of Australians can do a proper American accent, while the Brits all seem to get the same training. Like they're taught how to do an American R, and then told to avoid any modulation, to keep the voice at a completely flat pitch. The result doesn't sound like human speech, much less an American.

haha, but Aussie accents sounds so weird in American movies either way.

Although did anyone recognise Peter Phelps, he sounded pretty normal.

What was more retarded, that end scene was filmed in Oregon.

I have been to the real Bell's Beach, Australia in Victoria. It looks NOTHING like what you saw in the movie.
