Is this a chick flick?

I am not trying to use that as a pejorative. I describe myself as a traditional minded man as far as movie tastes- Gladiator, Star Wars, Dirty Dozen. I just watched this movie (ironically after eating fried green tomatoes for an appetizer the other night) and really enjoyed it. I don't think it's a chick flick but just a very good movie which shows the ultimate goodness of our humanity. 9/10

Chick flick is too broad of term. It can be used to describe overly sappy pretentious romantic crap. However the term is often applied to really good movies with a lot of heart too, like this one. I would say that yes it probably is a "chick flick" by most standards, but its a damn good movie.

reply

Definitely not. I hate chick flicks and I LOVE this movie.

reply

It's a story about love and friendship and family, even those not related in the strictest sense. It just happens to have two pairs of strong female leads. I consider The Notebook a chick flick because of the expressed love relationship, but I love it, too!

If there are grownup female characters, character development, and a realistic human story instead of grim dudes in plastic suits with molded-in fake abs chasing each other and fighting and blowin' stuff up, then it's a chick flick.

reply

Sadly this is true
Fuck them grim dudes in plastic suits!

I never thought of "chick flick" as derogatory. Simply films that focus on women and are extremely dramatic.

It's one of the biggest Chick flicks ever made but I watched it quite a bit growing up. My Sister liked it a lot. Great Performances in it.

reply

My wife likes this movie a lot, some time ago she asked me to watch it too and I think it is a good movie.

reply

Obviously it's almost entirely focused on "women's themes" so the question seems silly. Of course it's a chick flick.

Then again, I've seen a few bona fide chick flicks in my day, and honestly most of them were pretty enjoyable to watch. I was expecting this one to be enjoyable too, but it was kind of a chore to get through somehow. Not sure why, exactly. It certainly had its moments, but all in all I was just wishing it would hurry up and be over.

reply

Interesting. I remember loving the characters and story so much when I was a kid, and the music still gets stuck in my head sometimes. Gonna have to give it another watch now that I’m old and bald.

reply

After a moment of thought... I think it's just that I don't care much for Mary Stuart Masterson or Mary-Louise Parker. In general, as actors. I love Kathy Bates though, I wish she was in it more.
