Jack Ryan movies never took off because he's just unlikable

The guy is everything Americans and the world hate about our yuppies, smug, full of himself, thinks he's smarter than everyone else. Everything about the character shoves his affluence and self-righteousness in your face.

I think, to add injury to insult, the guy who wrote it worked in insurance sales before becoming an author, LOL.

Liberal retarded troll is obvious.

LOL...No, what he's saying is really truth, this reckless foreign policy of ours has been getting us into war after war, fomenting one intelligence disaster after another. This dating back to Allen Dulles heading the CIA, turning it into a one man (psychotic) assassination squad & regime changing machine, you are still reaping the fall-out. Dulles himself a former Princeton elite using others from that same tight nit corps, like Teddy Roosevelt's great grandson, Kermit. He was another Princeton Elite out to make name for himself, Dulles sent him to Iran to effect regime change there, look it up, operation 'Ajax'. Always the way the right wing wants to nullify their history by pretending it didn't exist, the American people too stupid & lazy to pick up a book & read. So they get away with it, but history repeats, remember this, write that down in the first inner leaf of your Bible.

We know its fashionable to try & reverse responsibility of our collective dismal past failures, that our 'Intelligence' agencies have been an oxymoron, rarely working in tandem & for years foggy bottom has been a disgrace, suffering compromise on the highest levels.

The problem with the right wing, you'd rather ignore, rewrite or bury history, one great example is Vietnam. It took former Secretary of State McNamara nearly 40yrs to admit Vietnam was a huge blunder, this is par for the course of the US right wing idiocy. But reality bites, US public gets fleeced again by the elites, their rickle down theory is the most rediculous thing, but you'd disagree? lmao.

Nothing of what he says had a damned thing to do with what you're talking about.

You claim what he says is correct (No... OP is just being a fraking asshat), but then you go off on a complete tangent.

::raises a hand::: I'm a liberal, and I always liked these movies and books.

reply

Something tells me that you aren't as liberal as you think - and that is a good thing. 

reply

I'm a liberal too. But a European liberal. And from what I've been told, a liberal in the US is something different from a liberal in Europe...

I believe liberalism in the US, has more in common with socialism in Europe than with European liberalism.

Liberals are considered left in the US if I'm not mistaken, but here in our country, (dark blue) liberalism is considered rightwing, with a strong economical program (kapitalism, lower taxes, hard working should be rewarded, almost all independent business owners are liberals, ...) and (slightly) conservative ideas, and not a lot of government control.

And btw, I like ryan too :) He's like the American James Bond, but without the cool car (but i believe mrs Ryan has a vintage Porsche, no?).

I'm just on my way up to Clavius.

reply

Yep, US liberals SUCK. They believe the government can do better at taking care of their needs than they can themselves. They completely ignore how wasteful and wealthy the government is.

Ryan most certainly is NOT the American James Bond. That is what Hollywood keeps screwing up. He went into the marines to prove to himself that he could do it. He would have been content being a history teacher, but kept finding himself drawn into situations around the world. He was also disgusted by how things were so political.

Very little of what Ryan has done has been physical. And, when he did have to fight, it wasn't with any sophisticated "karate" moves.

Cathy Ryan has a vintage Porsche, but she not only grew up with money, she's (now) head of Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins.

Tangent on that aspect. I know Clancy wrote how Cathy's parents worshiped at "the alter of the almighty dollar" and were very disappointed when Jack left Merrill Lynch. I wish Clancy (or one of the guys writing for him now) would address how her parents feel now that Jack is President.

reply

J-C !! Who are "they"? And you think people will will organize themselves to build Highways and Bridges and Lamp Posts? Hey, any thinking person knows Government is Byzantine and Wasteful, but to ignore the importance of having Government and to lay all the ills of a Wasteful Government at the Feet of Liberals is Biased, Uninformed and Disingenuous.

My impression is that both of Cathy's parents were dead by the time Jack became National Security Adviser to Roger Durling. The only time we see Jack interacting with his FIL is in 'Patriot Games'. The novel, not the film. After PG there is no more interaction, which tells me that he died in the interim.

reply

Completely ignoring your incorrect political stance, of Baldwin had stayed on it would've worked better ... Harrison took it to a notch that didn't fit the character as well

To the producers' credit, they refashioned Patriot Games to match Ford's age. His Ryan was now a military history instructor who eventually returns to his former post as a CIA analyst. You were supposed to get the impression Ford's Ryan was more seasoned and likely had that adventure with Reimus already. He was an updated version of the retired gunslinger (substituting satellites for guns) called to leave the homestead to stop the bad people.

Not to rain on your parade, but all of that was straight from the book. In Patriot Games, Ryan's an ex-Wall Street guy and current military historian at the naval academy, who has also previously done contract analyst work for the CIA--all by his early 30s. I'm pretty sure there aren't any tweaks admitting to Ford's age in the movie--they even keep the new pregnancy, which is a little more awkward when the parents are 50 and 45 than it is when they're 30ish.

It's pretty hard to imagine that a character who's already been through the stuff that happens to Ryan in Red October would be so surprised or conflicted as Ford's Ryan is about the way things work in the later parts of the film, where it's up to him to decide on destroying the terrorist camp where the IRA-types are training. That's not the mark of an old gunslinger, it's a newby being initiated into the covert ways of the CIA, much as he was in the book.

But the books are considered some of the best of their era. There in lies the point. The movies going public are lazy, ignorant and have the attention span of a toddler.

reply

You are such an arrogant jerk. You'll never have friends talking that way.

I stand by my comment. VERY FEW film goers even read books. And I do not consider comic books part of the equation. The over abundance of fantasy and wishful thinking are to blame for the lack of morality, responsibility and careful consideration that is so prevalent in our society today, in my opinion. Try looking for truth and facts instead of friends.

Has it occurred to you that maybe a lot a of people just don't have time to read a lot of books? Someone will have more time to watch a 2 hour movie than read a 500 page book. For instance it would take about 6 hours for someone to read One Flew over the cuckoo's Nest (I have read it by the way and liked it). It would only take them 2 hours to watch the movie. I myself like to read books but then again I live by myself, have a job that usually lets me off at least 2 days a week, and don't have any kids to look after. I have way more time to read than a guy who is married and has kids. A guy who is married and has kids will be more likely to have time to watch a movie than read a book.
