Why are Michael J. Fox and Lea Thompson playing the Irish couple?

First of all those Irish accents were horrible and secondly if you trace Marty's gene pool from 1885 to 1985 it makes absolutely no sense, why would his Great-Great Grandfather look exactly like him and why would his Great-Great Grandmother look exactly like his mother? The "Lea Thompson" genes shouldn't have been introduced into his family until George married Lorraine.

I realize that they wanted to have a reference to the same scene that happened in Parts I and II but this one just didn't make any sense.

Are you saying they ran afowl of an Irish man

reply

Because it's a trope in Hollywood movies for somebody to have an ancestor that looks just like him.

It's not a completely baseless trope. I came across a great-great-great-great-grandfather on my mother's side, that looks very much like me and my brother, like he could be a third brother.

The real reason was that Zemeckis just wanted to show off the effects of that time, by being able to have the same actor interact so extensively and fluently with himself onscreen... I have to say that the effect has aged badly and that I would have rather have another actor play those roles... but I still love these movies.
