"Welcome to prime time bitch!" is the moment Freddy ceased to be scary

It's a memorable catchphrase and the stuff of big box office .. but, in terms of fright value, it fell short. This was the line that made Freddy a rock star and phased out the malevolent child killer who kept to the shadows and spoke, but only sparingly. This one line led to Freddy sporting shades, having TV antennae coming out of his head, flying on a broomstick and generally behaving like a mischievous frat boy with a streak of Patrick Bateman in him.

It's funny this is considered one of the best ones, and later ones get criticized for being too comedic, but this is the one that introduced the comedy. I like this movie and even some of the ones most people don;t, but the comedy started here.

I never liked 4 or 5 though mostly because of them killing off the Dream Warrior characters because of the studio being cheapskates and part 5 was just too dark and weird.

I do like Freddy's Dead more than most. It is inferior to the first 3. But I enjoy the premise with everyone in Springwood having gone nuts and the prequel parts with Freddy. The NES powerglove Kill is one of the silliest scenes in the series. Some might not agree but Freddy Vs. Jason is on par with the first 3 imo.

I think Freddy vs Jason is underrated

While I do agree with your assessment, I do think it's safe to say that the comedic elements turned Freddie into an icon. The same thing happened with Chucky. Had they not gone the comedic route they wouldn't have become as main stream as they've become. As a matter of fact the only iconic horror character that I know of who never became a parody of himself is Michael Myers. Heck, even Jaws (a freakin' shark) became a parody of himself. And to add to that Godzilla also became a parody of himself. That one is crazy because he was initially just a guy in a rubber suit. Then he became a guy in a rubber suit that you knew was a guy in a rubber suit. Monster fans will get the difference- regular people won't.
