Like... where’s the karate?

The first film, like Rocky, was very focused on relationships and drama, but the fights that we saw were pretty good.

Usually the sequels bump up the action, but if anything it was even more dialled back here. The opening scene when Miyagi dodges Kreese’s fists which smash into car windows is awesome (but that was actually filmed for the first film and ported over) after that it’s a few brief altercations with a new set of bullies, a fairly disappointing Miyagi beatdown, the epic Miyagi-Sato fight never happens, and a rather uninspired end fight with dodgy choreography and the crane kick replaced with a close-up of Daniel’s face while he... delivers some punches?

We’ve moved into an era of great martial arts films and actors doing extensive Kung-fu training (The Matrix) and this just felt kinda limp by comparison.

Still, the drama was good, Daniel and Miyagi are as great as Rocky and Micky, although the unceremonious ditching of Ali by re-writing her as a fickle ho left a bad tase.

Agreed for the most part.
The car lot scenes were not shot for the first movie it was shot for the second. It was the original planned ending though for the first.
As for Ali, the actress took a break from movies to continue her studies at Harvard, so other than recast the part not sure what else they could have done besides write her out of it.

I don’t have a problem with writing her out if the actress was unavailable, it’s the way they did it - transforming her into a fickle ho, when they could have written her out in a way that honoured her character, like having her travel abroad or suchlike.

When spirit of drum is true in heart, no can defense.

To be fair, it's not 'Combat Kid', it's not 'Fight Movie', it's not 'Sparring Show'.

It's Karate Kid.

Karate is not 'fighting', it's a skill, mentality, philosophy and a form of Martial Arts wisdom. As they say, Karate is 'here', never 'here or here'.

You expect it to be where it never should be. There's a difference between fighting, sparring, movement and actual Karate.

It's not about showing off Karate MOVES, it's not about confronting or fighting with other people USING Karate - it's about the Karate that exists inside the Kid.

Hence, 'Karate Kid'. Whatever actually HAPPENS has nothing to do with it - what EXISTS inside the 'kid' is what these movies are all about. Whether the Karate moves are actually performed, is irrelevant.

The title refers to the Karate that exists within the Kid, regardless if he shows Karate moves or not, regardless if he uses Karate forms or not, regardless if he fights other people using Karate or not.

Why are these movie board commenters so external and superficial, fight-oriented apes instead of understanding that these movies are all about the INTERNAL, not about the external? If anything, they're SYMBOLIC, not realistic. If anything, they show what karate IS, not what karate moves LOOK like.

But people still don't understand.. sigh.

Bullshit. Your film has ‘karate’ in the title you need to deliver. You can still have lots of wisdom-dispensing and show us some beat-downs, The Matrix struck a good balance.

Also, in the rare moments we actually saw some fighting… it wasn’t great. Miyagi’s attack on Chozen and his gang was poorly choreographed. It doesn’t have to be Jackie Chan but let’s see some eyebrow-raising moves in keeping with Miyagi’s supposed reputation as a beast. Ironically, the best fight was Miyagi vs Kreese with the car windows at the start.

The ditching here pales into insignificance compared with the majestic contrivances required for the opening of Part 3:-

Come back from you holiday, your apartment has gone! Not only that, so has your mom (because your uncle has taken ill at the same time)! Where your girlfriend? She's gone too! Because she somehow landed the dance gig she'd long been dreaming of on the way to the airport or something... 🤔
