They did not arrive in the same physical place in LA 1984, so random spots within the area seems reasonable.
We learned in Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure, that a time machine can not only take you back in time, but also to a city of your choosing anywhere in the world. They had to program the city and year when they entered the time machine.
