Why didn't Reese recognize the Terminator?

When Reese and Sarah are peeling all over Los Angeles away from Tech Noir, Reese says that the Terminator is a "Cyberdyne Systems Model 101."

"Model 101" means that its skin covering is the one that looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger. If Reese was familiar enough with the model 101s to recognize the Terminator as one, why does he later tell Sarah that he had to wait before the Terminator moved in on her to be sure it was him?

reply

Theres obviously many different models. Reese probably simply hasnt seen a 101 yet, only got this information second hand.

Consider the time Reese comes from. Most of the human species has been killed in a nuclear war. They probably have a warrior code to not commit murder under any circumstances so as not to risk human extinction. Reese, being a model soldier wasn't going to take a chance of murdering someone who just happens to resemble one of the terminator models.

Yes, like others have said:

Arnold in this film is a T-800 series, Model 101.

But, in T2, Arnold is a T-800 series, Model 101 *Version 2.4* as displayed on its HUD when Sarah and John reboot it in a deleted scene from T2.

So....with that said, the T-800 Model 101 in T1 has to be a different *version*. Say, for example, Model 101 version 2 or something.

Get it? There are different *versions* of the Model 101. The T-800 in T2 had sort of a slightly older look with the shorter hair that it had in comparison to the T-800 in T1 with its younger look and longer hair.

The point I'm trying to make is that the Model 101' have different *versions* out there that all look slightly different from other versions of Model 101.

I could see a version out there that is *bald* with the look of a 90 year old man or something. That could be a T-800 series Model 101 version 3.5 or something.

I think Reese knew what the Model 101's looked like, but didn't know which *version was out there.

See where I'm getting at? Sorry for the confusion of this very long post, but this is my two cents. I wish there was someone out there that knows as much. There has to be.😊

I think that's more of a software update. Because the resistance reprogrammed him. I think there are other T-800s out there that don't look like Arnie and they would probably be model 102, 103 etc.

The fact that the terminator in T2 has different hair is most likely because Arnold got older and looked different. Doubt it was on purpose.

Did you see that dingy place she was sitting in? It was hard to see anyone clearly.

He may have not known which terminator was sent back anyway until he saw it then and there so wasn't sure who to look for.

It was a dingy club she was sitting, and hard to see anyone clearly. Also, remember the scene set in the future. When the Terminator attacks the rebels' camp? After you hear warning shouts of "Terminator! Terminator!" It looked nothing like Arnold. He just had to watch for which individual started moving toward Sarah, with his weapon drawn. They're designed that way to make them difficult to tell from humans. That's the point of infiltration.

reply

Its likely that Kyle was briefed by John or someone else in the Resistance before being sent back that it was a 'Model 101' that was sent back...even if he didn't know what it looked it.

More likely the t-800s all looked different until James cameron needed an excuse to have Arnold Schwarzenegger reprise his role.

"'Model 101' means that its skin covering is the one that looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger."

It was retconned to mean that, i.e., it didn't mean that in 1984.

reply

You're right, however it never made sense to me that "101" was somehow a newer upgrade of "the 600 series with rubber skin" that Reese mentions. Why would they count backwards?

reply

T800 (800 series), model 101.
A bit like BMW 3 series model 320.

reply

You’re absolutely right. 600 obviously comes before 800. However, I meant within the context of this movie before the retcon and the mention of the “800”, which never happened in this film. But then again this film never said “T-101” either, just that as the model number, so I guess that explains it.

reply

All of the above is bullshit. To paraphrase Joe Pesci.
Even with the retconning , and T800 model name, etc etc
No one has said anything that proves all 101 models look the same.
It could just mean they have the same power plant or something
Like a mustang 5.0 - that can come in a VARIETY OF COLOURs

reply

Very true. However, every 101 model we have seen, aside from maybe the one in Reese’s flashback in the first film, have looked like Arnold. We’ve seen like 5 or 6 that have the same appearance. That doesn’t mean they all look like that but apparently quite a bit of them do.
