the scene where kate talks about her dad dying ,its amazing the studio wanted to completely cut that out and were quite pushy about it . Joe dante had to go back and fourth and negotiate

Well it's a stupid scene. It's overly dramatic and out of place. That's why they make fun of it in the sequel. It baffles me that he was so adamant about keeping it in the movie.

Dragonzord! Mastodon! Pterodactyl! Triceratops! Saber Toothed Tiger! Tyrannosaurus!

I can only guess that it was put in there to add some depth to Kate's character. Without that scene, we probably wouldn't know or connect to her as much (and that's important).

It is a weird scene, though. They probably could've come up with something different and not half as disturbing.

It doesn't fit in the rest of movie, I think.

It's a strange scene, but... overly dramatic?

A debate exists, apparently even between Dante and the writers, whether that scene was actually supposed to be facetious. It does feel out of place, yet I myself always found it oddly funny... Like there was a joke in there that would be easy to miss.

Anyway, I like its absurdity.

I love the scene. It is either heartbreakingly poignant or hilariously absurd depending on what you bring to it.

The humour in the sequel is thanks to the fact that it's nominally set on Lincoln's birthday and Phoebe has a story about that.

You'll find that anything that was good in the original film is sent up in the sequel. Not just stuff you don't like.

I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be hilarious, and isn't out of place with all the humorous mayhem in the movie. I saw this movie in the theater recently and it by far got the biggest laugh.

reply

Not according to the director. You can take it as a joke. Or you can treat it as seriously as it is played.

There's nothing jokey about how it's played out. But in the context of the film, and the fact it's not happening to you, allows us to be amused by the incongruity of it.

it should have been cut. an alien/demon suspense threat movie doesn't need a 5 minute backstory monologue. I thought for a minute maybe they were trying to bore the gremlins to death.
