how did/could axel foley know jenny summers???

when he meets old buddy played by james russo he mentions her and axel goes OH I HAVENT SEEN JENNY IN YEARS

how did he know her??

reply

All due respect but...What kind of question is this? He knows her however people know people I suppose. Maybe they all went to the same High School.

reply

Jenny mentions to Victor that her and Axel grew up in the same neighborhood.

They know each other from high school. Jenny says so.

reply

All three were childhood friends. They grew up in the same neighborhood which means they all had common stomping grounds... schools... etc.

reply

Jenny Summers said she would be waiting tables if it weren't for Victor Maitland. It isn't clear what kind of neighborhood Axel, Mikey, and Jenny were from but anyone can move away and live an upscale life.

reply

Easy. Not only was it mentioned that they grew up together, she said she was waiting tables when she met Victor so he obviouly gave her a job at his gallery.

It's also obvious she was given her job because she's white, blond and attractive. She grew up in the hood in Detroit with Axel and Mikie and was given a good job based on her whiteness and looks.

I have witnessed first hand white women (one a nanny, the other worked in a bar previously) get hired off the street into high-paying managerial positions in fields they have no education, background or experience to manage black staffers who have been in their fields or with their companies for years with college education, yet weren't even offered these positions. This white women were put in their positions with no clue how to do the job, and expected the more skilled black workers to make them look good and help them hide the fact that they did not know how to do your jobs.

Simply put, it's called white privilege. It is not at all uncommon for a white woman from a non-wealthy background to be handed opportunities to work a good job and live a glamorous life. White people hand other white people great jobs all the time. It's quite common.

How does your rant have anything to do with the question asked? Tell someone who cares.

reply

It has everything to do with the question asked. It's not impossible for Jenny and Axel to know each other.

The OP assumed that because Foley is black from Detroit and Jenny is an attractive blonde working in an art gallery that they couldn't possibly know each when it's clearly stated in the movie that they grew up together.

In the real world, white people (especially attractive white women) from "unsavory" backgrounds with no experience are handed great opportunities and high paying jobs based on who they all the time. This is proven fact. So it's not at all far-fetched that they would know each other and grew up together.

My "rant" explains this.

reply

White privilege is a myth.

reply

Axel was a black man in Detroit with a troubled past, who had already made detective despite his youth. I guess he's privileged too.

It's well said and very true.

Axel and Jenny were in their mid to late 20's in this movie, which means they were born in late 50's. During that time Detroit had a population over 2 million people, and a large portion of that was white (including both my parents families). White flight didn't really start until after the riots of '67. By the mid '80's most white people had left the city for the northern suburbs. So its possible they grew up in the same neighborhood and attended the same schools.

As far as how could a poor white girl from the hood of Detroit be running the multi million dollar art gallery in Beverly Hills? Well its possible she wasn't from a "hood". It might have been a decent neighborhood at that time. And maybe she was attending college at Wayne State or the University of Detroit, and waiting tables to pay for it, when she met Victor. Perhaps he gave her an internship, thought she did a great job and hired her after her graduation, and she continued to move up in the organization.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......math doesn't check out?

reply

Which math? I would be happy to explain it to you in simpler terms if you need.

reply

Yes genius, please explain the math of how someone born in the 50s could be in their 20s in the 80s.🙄

reply

Oh ok, it's not your math skills that are the problem, it's your reading comprehension. Let me break it down for you.

The movie takes place in June 1984.

Lets assume Axel and Jenny are the same age, though I would think Jenny would be older since she's in a higher position at the art gallery. But lets split the difference and call them 25.

84-25 would be 59. Meaning they were born in 1959.

Of course these are just possible numbers. The original question was how could a young black detective and a white lady who runs a Beverly Hills art gallery be from the same Detroit neighborhood. I was just showing how it could have been possible at that time. Hope it wasn't too far over your head.

reply

Eddie murphy was born in in 61, fyi, and since they don't designate his age, lets assume thats his year of birth in this. Even at 25, you're stretching it to say 59' just to hit that 50s decade. Why not just say you meant the 60s and not be such a douchebag about it, rather than hang your hat on such a thin line? Is it that hard for people on the internet to admit they are wrong?

reply

Lisa Eilbacher was born in 56, meaning she was 28 in this movie, if we use your logic of just assigning everyone their actual age. So maybe their families were neighbors and even though she was older than Axel she was still friendly with him. Again, I was answering the question of how Axel and Jenny could have grown up together in Detroit at that time.

But since the idea of Eddie Murphy playing a character that was a little bit older than he was in real life seems like too much of a stretch for you to believe, lets go with your idea and say he was born in 61. He still could have been from the same neighborhood as Jenny, since as previously stated, white flight out of Detroit didn't start until after the '67 riots, and really didn't pick up steam until the early to mid 70's.

1959 qualifies as late 50's, which was what was previously stated. Thus answering your question of how somebody could be in their mid 20's in the 1980's when they were born in the 50's.

I feel like this is the kind of question zoomers who watch twitch and spend all day on the internet would ask.
