Hulce really nailed it. I think Hamill's an underused and underrated performer, but it's hard to feel sad since Tom Hulce was so good.

reply

id rather have had Hamill than Hulce

reply

To each his own.

reply

Why would you rather have Hamill? I mean, Hamill was so typecasted as Luke Skywalker. I think it would have been a distraction to the film.

reply

It could have broken his typecast. Heath Ledger was actively pushing against his "heartthrob" status with excellent effect - or Elijah Wood doing Sin City right after his wide-eyed Frodo.

reply

Maybe so, Ace, but I just couldn't watch it without thinking that he's going to say "may the force be with you" at some point. lol...

reply

"Salieri, you're a terrible composer."
"Maybe so, Wolfgang, but I AM YOUR FATHER!"

reply

lol

I don't think Hamill was right for the part, but I don't think Hulce was either.

reply

I liked Hulce, personally. Who would your Mozart have been? If you were casting it?

reply

I need to think about it some. Amadeus was one of those films where the acting was tour de force. Rarely does such a cast knock it out of the park. Hulce wasn't bad, but I think he was overshadowed by the other performances and they could have cast better - perhaps an unknown for Mozart.

Now, I have to admit I was stunned by some of the other casting choices that were superb: Christine Ebersole and Jeffrey Jones are two. I honestly wouldn't have auditioned either thinking (before seeing this) that either one had a shot. But they were both superb which proves my career choice in engineering was better than a career in casting..

Even the priest that Salieri was telling the story to was superb. If he didn't nail that reaction shot when it was finally dawn and Salieri finished his tale, the whole thing would have collapsed. That priest looked wrung out, not from being up all night, but from what he heard.

I'll give your question some more thought and reply in a day or so, even if I can't come up with someone.

reply

Might sound weird, but what about Tom Cruise? He was just coming onto everybody's radar there, and I think he's underrated as a performer.

reply

Yes. Whatever happed to Tom Hulce *snicker, chuckle, guffaw, snort-laugh*? NOTHING! Nada, zero, squat.

reply

mark hamill is a TERRIBLE actor. I'm very glad the role went to Hulce.

reply

I disagree dude His performance in TLJ Shouldve been Nominated for Best Supporting Over Sam Rockwell in Three Billboards outside ebbing missouri

reply

Just seeing mark hamill 'act' in Star Wars makes you cringe. He's not even good enough to be in a school play. He would make an awesome janitor though, somewhere in a basement.

reply

Hamill is a good actor, The only reason why you don't like him is because he's a liberal, He's a much better actor than Gina Carano who couldn't act her way out of a paper bag.
