I dont get the scene with the frozen TV dinner

What the hell is supposed to be happening here? Why would you sit down at a table with a frozen dinner and try to eat it?

So he's a teenager and can't cook....great but is he literally mentally retarded?

I think he was expecting it to be refrigerated, not frozen solid. It's just a character building scene.

Some people seriously need to lighten up.

I collect dead pigeons then I press them between the pages of a book.

First necessary human component is to eat, as he becomes an adult he must first learn how to satify basic human needs

It was to show how naive and pampered Joel was by his folks, especially mom. She always did everything and coddled him so much to the point he couldn't do basic things like cook his TV dinner. It showed he had a lot of necessary growing up to do to become a man.

All true.

But a high school senior trying to eat a frozen solid dinner IS a bit much to believe, as the OP is suggesting.

Microwaves were new at that time in history but a wealthy family like Joel's would probably have one.

Good grief. Go look up 'satire' in the dictionary.

You realize that TV dinners were intended to be put in an oven, not in a microwave, right? And that TV dinners came in a tin tray that was incompatible with microwave use?

I know you don’t. I’m just sneering at you.

First human imperative is to breathe, then to hydrate, then to eat; which makes eating the THIRD imperative. You can go a couple minutes absent air. You can go a week absent water. You can go a month absent food, depending on how fat you are.

You can't go more than a nanosecond absent ignorance on the internet.

It's a visual media device, or any truly developed artistic medium, to present a premise and take it to the extreme. "Bang. Zoom". He wasn't literally going to send her to the moon. I secretly believe you understand this, but I appreciate your forum zeal.

He wanted to go to Harvard but didn't know how to cook a tv dinner?

reply

He may have hit "timer" instead of "start."

Having realized his mistake, he makes a mockery of the situation.

An, "I meant to do that" moment of solitary zaniness.

reply

The joke is how those things coming out of the oven would be inconsistently cooked.

Joel is a pampered kid and most likely is not accustomed to making his own dinner......even something so easy as a tv dinner.

reply

I've tried some TV dinners frozen and they're pretty good. My favorite though is frozen pizza. No need to bake it. Just let it defrost for about 20 minutes, and dig in

reply

You need to heat that food to a certain internal temperature for safety

reply

Are you sure? I feel pretty healthy. Last night I even put a scoop of chocolate ice cream on my frozen pizza and it came out ok. I was able to eat dinner and desert at the same time
