Why name it "Halloween III..."???

Had absolutely nothing to do with Michael Myers.

The original plan was for there to be NO Michael Myers sequels. Each Halloween movie was originally intended to be a standalone story with an original theme.
The first movie proved so popular that the producers caved in and made a sequel. So, when this one came out, fans thought they were being cheated.

But it was guaranteed to confuse people given that Halloween II did have to do with Michael Myers.

Halloween II had to do with killing Michael Myers for good. Which is why the last shot of the movie is of him turning to ashes. Flames and smoke pouring from the mouth and eyeholes of the mask atop his lifeless, cremating body.

If Michael was coming back from all that then the promotion of HIII would be HEAVY on the fact that somehow they are going to have a character return who no longer exists except as fine particles of dust. The people who went into HIII assuming Michael to be alive either deceived themselves. Or were just plain stupid and ignorant.

To make money but deception is an awful way to do it.

Had it been called Season of the Witch it probably wouldn't have grossed as much being a standalone film.

Because they didn't take into account the amount of anally retentive nerds who would be go out of their way to be confused by it. Or anticipate that years later, smart arses with 20/20 hindsight would criticise them for not following a slasher movie sequel playbook that hadn't been invented in 1981/82.
