5.7 out of 10 star rating??? wtf!

this film should be at at least 8.4. how can people rate this film low? this is one of the best friday the 13th films.

reply

Movies like this always get low ratings.

reply

why is that? just because it's a slasher movie and a horror movie?

reply

cuz they suck

This is a meh movie even by F13 standards. Other than Jason getting the hockey mask and the dudes eye flying out of his head its pretty forgettable.

what are you talking about? it's pretty universally accepted that part 1, parts 2, 3, 4 and 6 are the best friday the 13th films. this is when the series was still at it's best. you must have this film confused with another. because this film has it all at the highest level. one of the best jasons, one of the best heroines/final girls, really cool and well made music, one of the most epic final confrontations, one of the best and most epic endings, one of the best young people characters groups, some of the best kill scenes, some of the best and most realistic makeup effects, and a great creepy atmosphere.

In no order the following films are better:
1,2,4,6. 5 is in the upper half of the F13 movie's.

The first two films are serious in nature with the expected antics of youths on vacation in the woods, but Part III introduced a campy element to the franchise, which pretty much plagues the rest of the series until the reboot in 2009. Not that I'm complaining much, as these films are only quasi-believable anyway.

Still, for me, this is the main detriment of Part III. The opening credits song tips off that this isn't a wholly serious horror film, like the first two. This is compounded when a couple of the protagonists meet some sinister bikers at a convenience store in the sticks, which takes place about 25 minutes into the story. These hoodlums are too cartoony to take serious and so it's hard to take the horror serious as well. This doesn't mean it's not an entertaining installment in some ways, just that it's my least favorite.

The dubious writing doesn’t help. For instance, why does Fox go into the barn? Speaking of that dang barn, why on earth are so many characters preoccupied with it? It’s like the writer wanted to come up with any possible excuse to use the barn as a focal point. Also, why does Vera leave Shelly to go outside and hang out by herself? I realize she probably wanted to get away from the pathetic guy, but she informs him that she’s going to go outside with a sense of purpose and come back in, but she really doesn’t do much outside. Sequences like this reflect lame writing.

Another noticeable difference between Part III and the two previous movies is that, although the story takes place in the area of Crystal Lake, the film was shot on the West Coast instead of the East Coast, specifically Santa Clarita, CA, and nearby Melody Ranch (where the barn is located). The geography is obviously dryer and much in contrast to northern New Jersey.

As usual, the film features a nice assortment of females – three white girls, a Hispanic and a black woman, the latter being the biker chick, Fox. It's hard to pick a favorite, but the main protagonist, Chris (Dana Kimmell) is probably mine, followed by the stoner, Chili, as well as Debbie and Vera.

Jason is bigger and more imposing than in Part II and this is where he acquires his iconic hockey mask, but Part III is my least favorite of the franchise due to the goofy elements, the dubious writing and one-dimensional setting. To me, it smacks of amateurism.

ok, so while i see what you are saying about the tone differences in part 1 and 2 compared to 3, i don't think this works against part 3. you see camp is camp, and campy is campy. what i mean is part 1 and part 2 are campy and have camp elements also just less funny campy elements than in part 3.

i mean the character of crazy ralph was kind of funny campy don't you agree? and he is in part 1 and part 2. and the red haired guy in part 2 is funny campy just like a funny campy character in part 3. i mean there are levels of campiness humor. the only difference is in part 1 and part 2 the campiness humor wasn't as pronounced as in part 3 but it's still campiness humor. i mean this whole series is not known for it's acting greatness so you can't criticize the acting in part 3 if you don't criticize the acting in part 1 and part 2. so then it comes down to great, atmospheric slasher films which they all are.

and what's wrong with the great disco theme song in the beginning of part 3? i love that song, always have and always will.

but part 4 is also funny campy like part 3 and everyone loves part 4 so i just don't understand why you are saying part 3 isn't that good at all.

what did you mean by a nice assortment of females?

what do you love about this series? is it the campy atmosphere or the funny campy atmosphere or is it something else? it seems like most people would say it's laid back, campy atmosphere or laid back funny atmosphere of these films is what makes them love this series.

I like Part 3 but even I don't like the Disco music in the opening credits. But then again I'm pretty picky about music. I really prefer the really creepy theme in the credits from the first 2 movies.

Parts 1 & 2 are serious slashers. Sure, they feature the amusing antics of youths in a camp environment, but there's no camp (no pun intended).

RE: "i mean there are levels of campiness humor. the only difference is in part 1 and part 2 the campiness humor wasn't as pronounced as in part 3 but it's still campiness humor."

I agree to an extant, but the "campiness" you speak of in Parts 1 & 2 wasn't really camp, but rather realistic youth shenanigans in a fun camp environment (fun, that is, until the killings mount up). Part 3, by contrast, took the series into a campy direction, which is also evident in Part 5, especially with the over-the-top mother & son hillbillies.

I wasn't saying the opening song in Part 3 is bad -- that's a matter of taste and context -- just that it tips off right out of the gate that Part 3 is a less-serious, fun-spirited installment.

RE: "what did you mean by a nice assortment of females?"

Just that: The movie features a nice assortment of females, like all of the Friday flicks.

RE: "i just don't understand why you are saying part 3 isn't that good at all."

I said it's my least favorite of the franchise, but admitted it was entertaining in some ways. I'm a fan of the entire series, but naturally some installments are better than others for one reason or another.
