Question about the robbery scene at the end?

During the scene where a guy was robbing Brad at the Kwik-E-Mart, is it true that if this had happened today the robber could file a lawsuit against Brad and possibly win as well as avoiding jail time?

Isn't it Apu at the Kwik-E-Mart?

Depends on the attorney representing them I suppose?? One could argue it was self defense on the part of Judge Reinhold, but who knows in 2023?? I mean they're putting away people for 30 Years for Rape when they don't have to have hard credible evidence and only hearsay now?? In 2023, you're definitely Guilty until YOU prove your innocence, not the other way around..

The guy had a gun - I think even today the perp would have trouble getting a civil victory for injuries that occurred in an armed robbery - but you never know...

I doubt it because at the moment Brad through the coffee, the robber was holding a gun pointed at him which most reasonable juries would likely conclude was self defense against assault with a deadly weapon. However, if the robber had turned to leave and was heading for the door and Brad then threw the coffee at him burning him badly, it's possible the robber could successfully sue under the grounds Brad was no longer in imminent danger at the point he threw the coffee. Still may be a tough sell but it's possible.

In some places, like California, if the guy was trying to take less than $900.00 he'd be turned loose without even having to post bail. The clerk would be jailed for assaulting him. This sort of thing has actually happened numerous times both here and in New York.
