Grease theme song

I've seen this movie numerous times since it came out, and i just found out about 6 months ago that Barry Gibb wrote the song. As a huge Bee Gee's fan, I can't believe I didn't know this, because now that I do know, it sounds exactly like something he would've written. I always liked the song, but I thought that Frankie Valley's voice, although I think his voice is great, just sounds too old for the song. Barry should've sang it.

It's a great song, but Valli was fine doing it. I'm a big fan of the Bee Gees but not so much from a vocal standpoint.

Barry did the background vocals as far as I remember...

I assume the rest of the music is originally from the stage show?

reply

If I remember correctly, Hopelessly Devoted To You, Sandy, and You’re The One That I Want were also written specifically for the movie.

Was hoping we’d get some BeeGeez falsetto version but it’s still good.

Amazing how they managed to insert Valli's vocal from the original soundtrack in the middle verse on a live show!

It's a classic track but Barry Gibb singing it would have been the wrong choice. At the time he was heavily associated with the disco movement, it would have sounded way too contemporary. Frankie Valli was a perfect choice, he had Gibb's range and was an icon from the early 60's whose voice would instantly transport viewers back in time.

Exactly! You could hear Barry's voice on just about every other song on the radio at the time...
