Now THIS is the kind of movie

they'd never make today. Truly revolutionary. People commenting on the quality of the animation, honestly, are part of the problem. If it doesn't look like it cost 300 million dollars to produce, you all think there's something wrong with it.

I agree, it has a ragged authenticity & raw energy that's lacking in so many slickly polished animated films today. And it's clearly an individual creative vision, not something made by committee with an eye primarily on demographics & merchandising.

Very well stated.

Are the masses really as unintelligent as you think they are?

In fact, probably MUCH worse!

I'm afraid you may be correct.

It'd be really hard for the next Bakshi to get funding, yeah.

Animation used to be a place for the counter-cultures, the iconoclasts, the irreverent, the crazy, and the truly bizarre to find a foothold. It was subversive and experimental - and yeah, I'm even talking about Disney who at first gave us a musical-visual feast like Fantasia and a film that was about the life cycle in a forest as much as the cute deer hero.

When they started to care more about filling out every character in every cast with a-list stars, that was when animation really took a dive. They all look the same, frankly, (it's not just that it's CGI, either - unique, cool things can be done with CGI), and they hire voices based on popularity not based on merit.

It's a strange film that took some getting used to, the animation is very much like his later work on Lord of the Rings, I found it a very compelling film, it has lots of violence and humor and is never boring, I would definitely watch this again. 7.5/10
