Just wondering if we could ever get to the position of having a critically over populated World and have to come up with a solution which would indiscriminately remove people over a certain age?
shareWhen the Earth becomes over-populated the population will adjust itself. There is a limit to the amount of food and fresh water to go around. Probably when the Earth's population is around 10 billion. Since the Earth's population is about 7.8 Billion right now that time will come sooner than later.

Humanity will survive, is my guess. But life's going to be even more of a struggle for most people than it already is.
We will survive as a species but life for us is going to change forever soon. Like you said, "a couple of generations or so."

shareWhich isn't logical. I mean, yes, the crazier fringe elements of the 1960s who took the "Never trust anone over 30" thing seriously would have been happy to have killed off everyone over thirty, but they didn't kill themselves when they passed thirty did they.
I mean it's a cool movie and hit the zeitgeist on the head, but the fact is no ruling body would set up a system that required them to commit suicide in a few years. Ruling bodies do that to their subjects, not themselves.

I must disagree. Several of the world's biggest religions have spent hundreds or thousands of years telling their adherents that there's something better after death, but still. The vast majority of believers try to put off dying as long as possible.
shareNot in our lifetimes, but maybe someday if certain concepts crept further and further into insane territory. Honestly, a few years ago I might have answered differently, but I've spent the last couple of years watching US politics prove that there's no bridge too far, watching people debate whether or not a virus is killing people, and on and on, and I have re-calibrated my estimates of humankind's capacity for basing laws and lives on stupidity.
