It is said that DDL patterned his voice in "There Will Be Blood" directly after John Huston -- though some detected the voice of the villain in "The Matrix" there, too.

Most of those proposed for Jake or Evelyn seem too juvenile. Finding mature actors who look like and have the demeanor of grownups in their thirties is difficult today. You have to get somebody around seventy like Liam Neeson to play Philip Marlowe just to make sure he seems like a fully mature man.

Ha. Yeah...it took years in development, but leading men shifted over time from middle-aged to "boy men." Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Josh Hartnett (for awhile), Leo , even Young Brad Pitt.

Irony: these "boy men" are "men men" now -- in their 50s and heading up, and then look better, but they still retain the boy look(Leo in "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," even as Brad looks pretty rugged, which is the point of THAT movie.)

And this: whatever people may think of him now -- over 10 years retired and perhaps too much a broad caricature of himself in his later years -- in 1974, Jack Nicholson was considered a very important new young actor. By the time he came to Chinatown, Jack already had three Oscar nominations(if not wins) under his belt (Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, The Last Detail.)

Not only are these remake casting suggestions too young...none of them have the "gravitas" that Jack Nicholson had at the time.

Who does, now? Ryan Gosling? He has an Oscar nom for ...Ken in Barbie.
