What I like about this movie.
It's very character driven and goes the extra mile to ground itself in as much reality as possible.

Absofuckinglutely. 1,000,000% accurate!! And it was also filmed in such a way that it doesn't seem to age. Even without cell phones and computers, it still feels classically modern. Not really dated at all.
shareFriedkin had an almost documentary style in many of his films. You can also see it in Sorcerer. I didn't see it in his more recent film "Killer Joe". When he utilizes that ultra-realistic style, they don't feel like fictional movies. It's like you are a hidden observer watching someone's unfortunate circumstances play out.
shareThere's a film noir feeling as well, particularly the scene where Father Merrin arrives at the house on a foggy night.
