The Exorcist vs Exorcist III

Just curious. How do you feel about the tremendous change in The Exorcist III - partially forced by the studio's demand for an exorcism scene - of the altruistic Damien Karras having been captured by the vengeful demon, forced back into his dying body ... and then forced to cohabit that body with the evil Gemini Killer...?

Karras does not appear AS Karras in Legion. Only his resuscitated body is present and it only houses the Gemini's spirit But in Exorcist III, poor Damien is actually present, trapped in his former body, and is made to suffer horrendously.

At first I experienced shock and outrage that the rewrite robbed Damien of his victory at the end of the first book and movie. What a mean thing to do to this saintly priest.

But in later viewings, I changed my mind entirely. Although bitterly unfair, the demon's capture of Damien actually serves to "up the ante" of the film narrative - creating a tension and exorcistic climax that the Legion novel wholly lacked.

I say this because in Exorcist III, Damien, who had sacrificed his life to save a possessed child, has now himself become the object of rescue - which in the film is jointly affected by Fr. Paul Morning and Lt. Bill Kinderman.

So do you think the rewrite was a cheat of what the original novel presented as Karras's victory? Or do you think that its cinematic fittingness - if not success - is justified as a strong new story element in Exorcist III?

The whole thing was a benighted, misbegotten mess.

Thanks for your comment. I do view the film as a flawed gem, but for me it works more cinematically than what has survived from Blatty's original film that was much more closely based on his Legion novel.

Any other movies you have passionate pleas about? Only cause I'm not that interested in these movies, but you seem like someone who has some ideas, I could have a conversation with.

I actually LOVED Exorcist III. That jump scare with the nurse in the hospital was art!

The movie has it's flaws for sure but I still loved it and watch it every Halloween :)

I loved that plot line with Damian Karras as well. I always wondered what would happen to his soul after sacrificing himself to save Regan and I thought E3 did a good job of completing his story :)

Yes! Damien never appears as a character in Legion - only his resuscitated body.
But in EXIII Damien cohabits his body with Vennamun/the Gemini, forced to watch as the Gemini carries on his Georgetown murder spree.

One thing I noticed in the exorcism scene: for the first time, Blatty shows divine intervention when a beam of holy light animates the injured Morning and assists him in encouraging Karras to "Fight him, Damien!" The God who was known only by his absence in The Exorcist and Legion is now allowed a small but crucial role in EXIII's climactic scene.

steveb1, did you used to go by the IMDB name bastasch8647?

You sound very similar.

Good post, BTW.

reply

Yeah, that was / is me.

I also had other "nyms" like Leland Palmer, Mr. Foot Grenade and Lesser Rorqual, if any of them ring a bell.

Nice to hear from you!

I'm glad you're back.

I always enjoyed your posts.

BTW, Some time ago I rehashed a thread over at Exorcist III about the Joker statue scene. The comments you added and the way TheSolarSailor broke the scene down I thought was really interesting and added a new layer to the film. I never noticed all the stuff that goes on in that scene.

Good to see you.

Thanks, Paz! Nice to be back in communication with you for sure.

I prefer Exorcist III to the original (which I watched last night at a drive in). I also like the change in the movie with Karras.

reply

Wow. That's amazing that you recognize someone from their writing style in posts :) I'm glad you two found each other again! Life is awesome even during rough times :)

I just returned as well; you're my Exorcist go-to guy. "You really don't want me to play?" I told you a few years back that this line bothers me from Ms. Macneil.
