Kinski madness

I think you can say he's perfect for the role. He's mad! In the early scenes he's hitting and yelling at the Indian slaves for example. Wtf!

reply

filming, he shot an extras finger off, and Herzog threatened to kill him if he walked off set. On the set of Fitzcarraldo, he was so abusive to the natives that one of them offered to kill him. Herzog politely declined, saying he needed him for the rest of the shoot. Herzog would also sometimes provoke him into fits of rage so that when he burned himself out he could get shots of him being calm. Genius often comes at a price I suppose. Tragic really.

reply

Herzog tends to exaggerate. Won't believe half of things he is saying.

Kinski was known to have a violent temper (among other things). Going by all the behind the scenes footage, along with Kinski’s reputation, believe Herzog.

reply

I know about his temper, but I was referencing the story about how somebody offered Herzog to kill Kinski.

reply

I heard Herzog speak on this in the documentary about their relationship.

reply

Me too, but my point is that he doesn't like the ground truth and it is known to stage some scenes in his documentaries. He calls it "ecstatic truth". I think he does the same in interviews.

reply

Actually I found a confirmation by Kinski that Herzog loves tall tales. This particular story is about how Herzog pulled a gun at Kinski during the filming of Fitzcarraldo. It never happened.

Oh, yeah, that part might not have happened.

Stupid app cut the beginning off. Should read:

He was a deeply troubled man. During filming...

I read his autobiography.

Crazy stuff.

reply

Great actor when the movie called for it, but a deeply disturbed and possibly despicable individual if his daughter's allegations are true.

reply

I felt in love with Aguirre but yeah, after reading about his daughter's allegations, I just couldn't think of the movie in the same way.
