I was surprised by that, was Vertigo last time...a rather prestigious title that.

2001 is among the few films for which a good case can be made, especially if a factor is the influence a movie has on its genre. Among Hitchcock films I'd argue that Psycho is a better pick partly for that reason.

I have no issues with this, I can agree, it is a great movie. Although, the biggest complaint about it is the lack of dialogue.

Geno, in a different thread on the Inglorious Basterds board, you stated that you don't like subtitles. What do you think of silent films? 2001 almost qualifies as a silent flick.

I actually thought the small amount of dialogue in 2k1 was one of it's strong points.

Thereby rendering Sight and Sound completely lacking in credibility.

Citizen Kane should be #1. Because unlike 2001 It actually has a plot and characters. 2001 is like a 2 hour long screen saver with only one decent character named Hal 9000.

Why do they do that? There is no greatest movie of all time. I loved 2001 when I saw it in its original Cinerama or whatever the hell that huge widescreen was called. Every second of it fascinated my childhood self.

I've watched it again a few times over the years, but since before the turn of the century I can't really sit through it anymore. Compared to a movie like for example "Casablanca" that I have seen so many times and could sit down and watch again, and probably will regularly until my eyes close for good ... 2001, classic that it is, fails the watch-again test.

I love it, I think it is one of the top Science Fiction movies every made, and it is majestic and grand and wonderous, but it is slow and tedious and you people do not have the patience to watch it either for the most part.

If I had to criticize it, I'd say there is not enough of a pay-off at the end. No one knew what the hell the movie was trying to say, and whatever it was, the movie didn't say it very well.

For Kubrick, I can watch "Paths of Glory" or "Spartacus" over and over, but not 2001.
