Yes.

The quintet that Johnny Quest traveled with certainly has felt like the kind of improvised family that's so familiar to gays and the way that Race and Benton took care of each other certainly suggested an affection based in more than just having survived plenty of dangerous adventures. We got confirmation of those suspicions, however, when the relationship took a turn for the worse and Dr. Quest has to hire Harvey Birdman to represent him in a custody battle over Johnny and Hadji.

There was also the gay subtext of the relationship between Dr. Benton Quest and Race Bannon. Did you notice the sideways glances they cast at each other in the opening credits as if to say “Wait till the kids are asleep then I can show you that new experiment, if you know what I mean”?

The real question is why Jonny looked more like Race Bannon than his own father.

reply

The theory is that Race and Benton were a couple. Perhaps Race was the true biological father. But Benton was his "father" as well.

Btw. once at a comic convention I asked this question of the creator of the series. He emitted a very naughty laugh. "You think something went on during those jungle missions, huh?", he quipped.
