*Very* interesting list!

Uncommonly, you've got a Roger Moore up at the top. I'm not going to argue, while my personal favourite is From Russia with Love, your choice of The Spy Who Loved Me is a fantastic film, and is one of Moore's finest. Moore is underrated as Bond, and people give him too much crap for daring to be fun. Great choice.

Moonraker and AVTAK I'm less fond of. They're fun, but Moonraker loses some points from me for its Star Wars ripoff finale. Jaws' ending is really nice, though. A View to a Kill has some great villains with Zorin (Walken!) and Grace Jones as May Day, but Moore himself was looking tired. He still has his charm, of course, but he finally started to look his age, and it drops a bit for that reason. I don't hate it, I don't think Moore is awful in it, it just drops a bit (for me).

Just as interesting, you've got a couple Brosnans, but your top 10 also holds spots for the most serious Bonds, Craig and Dalton. A lot of contrast, in other words.

I'm more of a cliche with my tastes, I'm afraid. My top 10 is peppered with Connery. I love all the Bonds (but for one), but I agree with the general consensus that Connery was tops. Not that he didn't crank out a bad one with Diamonds Are Forever (my second-least favourite).

I'm curious about your thoughts on OHMSS. It cracks my top 10 from its excellent story and good writing. It's got some thrilling action, one of the best Bond girls, and...a real let-down for Bond himself. Lazenby is a flatline. He comes off as kind of dull, frankly, and while he can handle the action scenes and is serviceable, he just doesn't bring anything interesting to the role. But because the rest of the movie is so strong, it pulls Lazenby up (for me).

Ultimately, everything's subjective, and while our lists are radically different in many ways, I've long felt that Bond is Bond, and there aren't "wrong" answers here, since each film contains some of the fun, the classic Cold War Spy Movie, the action flick, and the unique blend of flavours that is 007.

Except for Quantum of Solace. That's the worst one for sure.

For posterity:

Well put... everyone has their favorites but they are all Bond. Sometimes you feel like pure action, sometimes camp, sometimes serious... that's the beauty of this franchise. There's something for almost any mood.

This is pure anecdotal observation, but Bond is one of the best fandoms I've seen for acceptance. Maybe this is ironic, given how James Bond's reputation is (indeed, his personality is not necessarily the most open and accommodating). But Bond fans don't tend to hate on each other for our favourite versions of the character. We don't usually hate on EON. We might dislike a film, but that's it. We hear somebody go, "I love Lazenby!" and respond with, "I don't, but that's fine." Instead of saying something like, "You're an idiot!" or "You're not a real Bond fan!"

It's weirdly heartwarming.

reply

No, you're right. For example, Reddit is a place where toxicity and rudeness are the norm. However, I'm on the Bond subreddit and it's honestly the ONLY sub I go on where everyone is cordial and respectful.

Solid list.

I'm starting to feel like I should maybe rewatch Moonraker and reevaluate it.

reply

It gets hacked for ripping off Star Wars, but that's only at the end and I don't care... it was pretty entertaining.

It's just so rewatchable. It's got a great pace, some incredible visuals (the first shot of Drax's space station still impresses), a smart and gorgeous Bond girl, Jaws, gadgets galore, tons of great locations, Moore was still young enough to pull it off effortlessly, and Drax was a droll and creepy villain.

reply

Yeah, I do cringe a bit thinking about the ending. But, yeah, I should rewatch it for the rest of the film and go over it again.

You certainly got the last two correct. Although, I think QofS should be last (is it because you like Olga?) I find it odd that your first choice isn’t even an Ian Fleming Bond novel but just the name of his Jamaican estate, Goldeneye. Yet, I thought this was the best of a Brosnan Bond movie. With that in mind, your #2 is the best and fantastic and the one they started with. It was the first and it was the future to Ian Fleming Bond movies. Casino Royale is a great book. I think it’s better than On Her Majesty’s Secret Service where he meets his wife, Tracy. Dr. No is a great book too.

If you start reading the original novels, you have a whole new take on the movies because some books are better than the movies. And the Bond in the book is much better than any Bond in any of the movies. And this is where you realize that Roger Moore just doesn’t work - when you read the books.

License To Kill is number 11? I thought that was one of the worst Bond films I had seen despite it being filmed in my hometown. I liked Dalton and The Living Daylights but this film seemed flat to me.
