It spoils the movie's central plot point, but nearly all life insurance policies have a suicide exclusion. It typically applies only to the first year or two after the policy is purchased. This can be litigated. Google "Heath Ledger life insurance" for a real life story.

George Bailey commits suicide and from hell sees that the life insurance company is not going to pay the death benefit. The End.

Maybe Life insurance policies back then had full exclusions for suicide. But nowadays, after two years from the time a policy is purchased, the suicide exclusion doesn't apply.

I don't think that's justified. You're correct, but I'm surprised insurance companies would allow this. The idea of insurance is to pay a benefit for "unforseen circumstances". If I was writing a policy, I would never pay out for suicide. It's the equivalent to arson on your house or business, which is a crime.
