Kerri Strug, a true American hero

https://youtu.be/cqUjo_rOxYc?t=80

one of the toughest, strongest gymnasts in history. she walked back down that runway knowing that she was hurt and that it would be dangerous to vault again but she shook it off and went again like it was nothing. and she landed on one foot! amazing, absolutely amazing.

THAT's something to praise.

It doesn't mean that what Biles did was wrong. She didn't want to take risks, which is fine. There's nothing to glorify there, though. It's forgettable at best.

reply

There was no mental health stuff in the 80's.

reply

More white privilege. Biles would have done that with two broken legs and a broken back.

During the whole Biles flap, some people have commented that they now find the Strug thing disturbing. The US team already had the team championship locked up, Strug didn't need to vault, but that creepy coached pushed this teenager to vault on a an injured leg, yeah, it turned out to be a career-ending injury.

Athletes shouldn't be pushed to sacrifice their health for wins or medals. They aren't taking hills from the Nazis or falling on a grenade to protect their unit, it's just a fucking sports event.

reply

Sorry, my friend, but you’re wrong. Bella Karolli did not push his athlete. Strug was already committed to the task. The famous TV shot of Bella shouting “YOU CAN DO IT” was a man giving his athlete his support and his energy to help her execute her commitment.

Creepy? The man coached Nadia Comenica, Mary Lou Retton and Kerri Strug. I don’t think creeps are capable of that.

To be kind, I don’t think you and I see the Olympic Games the same way. I see the Games as being a world where there IS no tomorrow. That’s just me, and some others.

reply

No, you and I don't see the Olympics or sports in the same way, the older I get the more I see sports as young people ruining their health with extreme diets, performance-enhancing drugs, and needless injuries, in pursuit of pointless goals. If you're ever going to damage yourself in pursuit of a goal, say, give yourself a career-ending injury, let it be pulling someone out of a burning building or tracking down a serial killer, not a pointless sport!

As for Karoli being creepy, a lot of people who are tops in their field can be creepy, and precisely because they *are* the best. People don't usually get to be the best in the world at something, by being kind, thoughtful, and ethical, they get their by putting career goals ahead of every other consideration, and yeah. Karoli was later accused of abusive coaching practices.
